View Full Version : Yokohama AVS ES100 tires...

i've already narrowed my slection down to these tires, but I have a couple questions first...
1) what speed rating should I get, is there any advantage of the Z rated instead of the W? i obviously wont be going 149+mph very often, so it doesnt seem woth the extra 200 it will cost (50 extra per tire).
2) where is the best place to get them? tire rack was my first impression, but does anyone know a better place?
3) before im 100% set on these tires, how do they compare to the yoko parada spec-2? anyone have any experience with both? the avs's have a tread wear of 280, the parada's have 300? which one will last me longer with my *small* camber issue? also the parada got better handling and dry traction ratings, but worse wet traction rating (by only a little bit). im just not seeing much difference in the tires. please tell me what you know
thanks in advance guys!

I have experience with both. But only used the parada spec 2s for a couple months when i was borrowing a friend's 17s before mine came.
My opinion, both tires get loud rather quickly. The parada's scared me in the rain. Not as sturdy as the es100s and awful going through large puddles. They were, however, monsters on the dry, however, my es100s are 20mm wider and even better in the dry and much better in the wet.
Better tire for the money? probably es100, but damn, i have less than 5k miles on them and they are a little too loud.

In my experience, all Yokohama's are loud (r componds not included)
I like the ES100's and in every case outperform the Paradas.
Paradas were designed to have the "tuner" look, ES100's were designed to perform.
If you want another alternative, the Toyo T1-S is a better tire in wet and dry plus is very quiet. The down side is more money and wear a little faster.
As for the Z or W rating, look at your average or even your top speed you've driven. W rating will be fine ;)

If you have a local discount tire direct dealer, you can have them price match tire rack. It depends on numerous variables and which competitors are in their locale but you can get good luck with price haggling this way, this was what I did when I got my Kumho ASX's ;)
If you don't have a local installer, this will obviously not apply to you

I'm debating between getting some ES100s right now, or just saving up for a new 15" euro weave with ES100s. ;)

I will try and find out where I bought mine. Mine were cheaper than that. The site was reallly plain but it worked better than that and I think my rears were like $95 in 245/40R16.
Yokohama doesnt use the RWZ rating they use a W## rating and they change with each size on the ES100s but all are rated for over 140 so tis a non-issue. I would give you specs and prices but my car is apart on a lift and I am down at bimmer8604s house so I have access to nothing.
And I also say they rock.

Potenza RE750's have been getting great reviews, but they cost a bit more than the Yoko's.
The AVS ES100 is a nice overall cheap tire, but there are certainly better out there.

so I just spoke with a guy at tirerack (oscar) and i told him to give me the rundown on these 4 tires....
1)bridgestone re750
2)dunlop sport sp FM901
3)yoko avs es100
3)yoko parada spec 2
he said... the dunlops are shit, by far the worst tire i listed, the bridegstones are the best, followed by the yoko parada spec2, followed by the avs es100, then the dunlop dead last. he said the parada spec2 handled better in the rain because the es100's rain treads were too small or some shit like that. He said the parada spec 2 would take corners better, and handle better wet, but they are about the same dry, and the paradas would last longer. but he said that the bridgestones are far superior to any of these, they are not even in the same league, they out perform on every level, and will last much longer. the question is, do I want to spend the extra 200 for the bridgstones? and should I just believe this guy because he works at tire rack....

my es100's are Z rated, GET THE Z rated... its not about how fast you go, its about how stiff the sidewall is. You will be more pleased with the performance of a Z rated than a W, V, or H. I'm speaking from personal experience...

I love my Pilot Sports, but at $180/each they are a little pricey.

I just started running some Parada spec 2s on the front. I probably would have gone with ES100's because of the price, but they are not made in my size. The paradas are a little noisy on the interstate, but grip extremely well. I don't think I've really had to drive with them in the rain yet, and if I had it would be hard to tell how well they do since they're in the front.
I autocrossed on them 20 miles after I put them on, the car was SKIPPING sideways the first couple laps instead of sliding. Got 'er broken in though. ;)

My dad has The old RE730's on his E30 M and they are an awsome tire in the wet and the dry and they are not noisey and he is getting milage out of them. He has Pole positions SO3's on his E34 M5 and they are even beter and they arent wearing like i thought they would either. He had Kuhmo 712's on his M5 before and he didnt have any complaints on them for the money said they could have been a little stickier. I had the AVS sports on My E36 and i hated them every moment that they where on the car. I hear the es100's are an overall better tire than the sports. anyway Go brigstone if you want a serious tire. for the money i hear the kuhmo ASX's are a really nice tire. not a very agressive tread pattern though. I dont know i have never had them. I have had 711 and 712 and they are ok tires. but the 730 and S03's have really made a beliver out of me.

I love my RE750s.. I was not impressed with ES100s at all, they're an okay budget tire but that's about it.

What about dunlop SP sport FM901's? I had a set but never mounted them because they were worn to the cords.

Did you read the thread? He posted about them, and the Tirerack guy is completely right. One of the worst performance tires made today.
BTW, you can do a lot better than ES100's, but you're going to have to spend a bit more. As others said, the RE750's get great reviews. Also keep in mind many are getting much better mileage out of RE750's, so the price difference becomes nil in the long run.

Wait until they wear down. I had them on my car for a week or so, sounded like dead wheel bearings at low speeds.

Isn't that their all season entry? That really isn't in the same class as these tires.
I have had 711 and 712 and they are ok tires
Stay away from 711's and 712's at all costs.
I agree with what you said about the 730's and S-03's performance wise, but you really can't base tire judgement on brand name (what you said about Bridgestone). I can't stand it when people say "don't get Kumho's", because the MX line is awesome. Something with Goodyear even, look at their F1 series tires. It's even funnuer when the reviewers on Tirerack say things like "much better than my old Yokohama's". Dumbass, you're not telling me shit, are they are better than $30 all seasons or ES100's? Just about every company has good and bad models.

You both have to realize that the RE750s are not even comparable to the RE730s. The 750s are on a whole 'nother level. The 750's are more like the s03 pole positions than they are the older 730s. They basically took the s03's design, made a harder compound to last longer with softer sidewalls to be a little more "cushiony" and altered the tread pattern slightly for noise, wear, etc.. I'm sure there was more to it, but the 750s really are based off the s03. They took their best max performance summer tire and made it last and ride better while only giving up a little cornering/steering response. It's all about what you're going for. I want RE750s as my next tires, but when i go 9.5x17 in the back, i can only get Michelin pilot sports in 265/35.

I have Kumho ASX's now. I had Yoko ES 100s before. Apples and Oranges. I got the ASXs bcos of $$ reason, had I not been broke I would not have bought them.
My driving style and Yokos means they only last me about 6 months.
ASXs are good for daily driving and an occasional excursion or two, def. not a dedicated auto-x or DE tire IMHO

I am running the AVS ES 100's and my impression is they are good in dry so far. A little loud but hell I want a tire that's gonna have good turn in response. Wet well been out of the country for the wet stuff lately.
And leaving shortly again so I miss the rain again. I like the Toyo T-1S but it's pricey at $135 a tire.

PS: The wet perf. of the yoko is hard to beat for the $$ . The characteristics of the tire are what make me like it for the $$ paid.

3)yoko avs es100
any suggestions?
1. If you're gonna spend extra money for the parada's, then get the RE750s!!! The parada's are not that stable in the rain. I disagree with what tirerack said.
2. Buy the RE750s. They're the best tire in every way out of your choices. They're not that much more than Paradas.
3. The ES100s are good for the money. I think they're pretty much the same as the paradas except better in the wet and almost as good in the dry.
Honestly, get the RE750, the price is great for how long they last. Not to mention they're quieter, have better wet and dry traction, etc... The Parada's are a poor choice i think. They're not any better than the ES100s, yet more expensive.

If you read our posts, you'll realize we never once said the RE730's are anything like the RE750's. He gave opinions on every tire he's driven on, and I just gave my feedback. Note that also made another post in the thread recommending RE750's.

Oh i understand. I was just giving my opinion, but also made that specific comment to chbimmer because he mentioned the RE730s almost as a comparison (how i read it anyway, since we were talking about the 750s and he mentioned the 730s). And you reponded to it...anyway, i just wanted to make sure there was no confusion here.
PS. thanks on maX. It's so sad to see so many dumbasses on a single forum all at once.

Yeah those comments where just from my experiance. And also when i said "brigstone" I meant the ones that i was talking about in the thread, s03's and 730's.
Funny that some of you guys mention that the 750's are on a new level because i was talking with a guy over the weekend and he was saying the same thing, he loves his.
And the Kuhmo 712's for the money i really dont think that you can beat them. I have had them on 4000lbs cars and on 2100lbs cars. They have done well performance wise and also wearing wise in both applications.

Yea, no big deal. It sounded like you were speaking like the 750s were just an updated 730, so I just wanted to point out that it's a completely different design, compound, tread, etc...Essentially a completely different tire all together, it just shares the line name. Anyway, it's all good. I just wanted to make sure there was no confusion.

well there was until you said that. I did som research on the tires as well and they are a totally different tire. thanks for the enlightenment
