Best way to find out is to open the cover..
the shafts are moving when it clunks so hopefully all the teeth are on the ring gear... my experience, it ends up being worn spider gears.....

People can be so ridiculous... So at the shop, I've had this person call me 3 times for a timing chain service on an M60B44.

You might pop in a used one that works for a while, but no used engine will last longer than a properly rebuilt one.

If you lost a hold on the gasket because of the nuts being under torqued, you should feel that when loosening them up.
