yes, precisely.
The top can be chamfered on inside edge and/or swedged out so it has a bit of flare so the O-ring doesn't snag going in.

I returned the unit.
It had a 700w motor and it just wasn't possible to trim it down enough to be suitable for the e30. Lesson is that the e30 needs a much smaller motor,...

Update.
I drained the rack of fluid which helped a little bit. Steering feel is awesome for parking lots and slow speed driving.

I don't remember that much about the IVM except 80% was not applicable, it mainly provides power to the few power hogs (Valvetronic motor & water pump) and that the K-line is supposed to go through...

The output side of the motor unit has a pin that was a pivot in the original GM installations, so lacking a proper mounting flange I fabricated a bracket that uses that pin. 5/8"...
