    Another cheap 318 - My Project '84

This post will be to track and share my progress as I work on my 318 project. Sorry for the long first post!

The lovely early 318. What better way to dive into BMW's than the least desireable model ever made? :D

Some background - I've been a VW guy ever since I was a little kid and have owned a bunch over the past few years. So when I finally got a "real" job in early 2007 and a place with some space for a project car, naturally I went looking for them again. This led to one problem: I wanted RWD, so VW's were off the list.

I wanted to stay with a german project at least, so a friend of mine suggested an E30. I looked around a bit and they definitely fit the bill; small, boxy, RWD, cheap. So the search began....

6 months later, a pretty clean looking '84 318i popped up on eBay at a BMW dealer about 6 hours away (CR's in Newville PA, they seem to be pretty well known around here). I put in a bid and to my surprise won at $600.

I had the car trailered up here a few weeks later and it was even better than described; besides a little rust on the battery tray, the car is absolutely rust free - better than my '99 Nissan Maxima daily driver.

Cliff notes: '84 318i 5 speed, 98% rust free, 78k miles, for $600. Runs and drives great. Yee haw!

Fresh off the trailer and dirty as hell:

Only mod when I bought it were the E36 325is seats pictured above. They're being yanked and replaced with racing buckets - the E36 seats give me no headroom at ALL.

I drove the car for a week in October 2007 before putting it away for the winter. The past few months have been spent gathering parts, and in the next post I actually start doing something with them! haha

After months of procrastinating and just buying stacks of parts, I'm finally starting to prep the stuff so it's ready to go on the car in late April.

Drove out to Buffalo last night and added US Ellipsoids to my parts pile, as well as 51mm strut housings from a an '89 325is to make upgrading the suspension a bit easier. :)

Managed to get a few minutes of work in the shop too:

Started sanding down the Zender rear valences (still need to source a middle section, or come up with something custom) --

Sanded and threw a coat of primer on my iS rear spoiler --

So, with my latest pickups here is what is already purchased --
    • BBS Front Valence
    • Taurus sides
    • Zender Rear Valence
    • iS Rear Spoiler
    • US Ellipsoids
    • All Red Tails
    • Rear Euro Plate Filler
    • Front plate bracket (might trim down into a filler)
    • Vert bumper trim (doesn't get wavy like other DB trim, and has the later style side markers)
    • Crack free dash
    • 2 Corbeau-replica racing seats
    • 51mm strut housings and 325is vented disc upgrade
    • 16" ASA Wheels (look like Momo Arrows)
Stuff I'm also doing but can't until the car is back home (it's stored about 30 miles away) --
    • Tucked and painted DBs
    • Window tint (girlfriend bought me a gift certificate)
    • Painting mirror shells body color
    • Shadowline

    Still need to purchase --
    • Suspension (Probably Bilstein Sports and IE3s for now)

Yeah....it's going to be a busy couple of months.

Haha yeah, the steering wheel reminds me of a really fat MTech 1 for some reason. I'd like to get a different one eventually when I find something I like.

I was planning on going Turbo M10 in 2-3 years, but a VERY cheap (sub $200) M50 presented itself the other day so that plan may change for me too. :)

turbo M10 sounds fun; my goal is along the lines of 5.7l and pushrods :o

for $200 the M50 sounds like a good idea - gives you time to put the M10 on the stand and build a 500hp beast :D

Good start! I would love an m50 for $200 myself....

Are you going to upgrade rear brakes or just doing the fronts ?

I had an entire 325is rear subframe with trailing arms to convert to rear disk (your thread on one of these boards was my main inspiration actually). I ended up selling it for some quick cash (hit a deer in the daily a month ago) but plan to go that route again eventually. The fronts will be done this year though since I'm getting a bunch of the needed parts cheap/free. :)

Yeah I'm still interested (obviously not keeping them red though :p). Did you get a shipping quote? Shoot me a PM/AIM sometime.

Great deal for $600. I had one of those steering wheels in my old 528i, I hated it, they are huge. I will be back up in the area around the 11th. Pm me, I have a few extra steering wheels around I may part with, (a m-tech 1, a pimp white leather Rial, and a few others) I used to kind of collect them.

Sweet, thanks for the info! I was wondering if it wasn't stock to the E30, it definitely seemed a bit large for a car this size haha.

                              Small update for today:

Started sanding down the BBS valence, ran out of 60 grit so didn't get much done.

And wired up the harnesses for my Sealed Beam -> US Ellipsoid conversion...the electrical tape is just there for extra piece of mind, they're definitely crimped tight underneath and not going anywhere.
