    Royal Purple

I was at the auto store with the intention of buying the M1 15-50 that I've been using for some time now. While I was browsing, I overheard one of the clerks explaining different engine oils to some guy. Basically the conversation was "I would put castrol in this car because...and valvoline in that car because....and if you're high mileage well then use this...." I was interested in what he had to say at the start then slowly tuned him out when it didn't pertain to me. But then he got going on Royal Purple and how its the greatest thing since sliced bread. I still didn't care what he was saying until he, and I swear to god this happened, he lowered his voice and said, "its better than mobile 1" Like it was some secrete or something....I was suddenly back into eavesdropping mode.

Then I got all self conscious and butt hurt about M1 and had to go home and research Royal Purple.

My findings have been positive, between the "super premium" oil filters and ultra hardcore our shit don't stink wear protecting oils...I dont want to say I'm sold, but I'm very intrigued and wanted to run it by yall and see what you thought.

With our work discount, Royal Purple is $2.XX a quart. I still don't buy it.

The fact that Royal Purple won't reveal what base stocks they use leads most people to believe that they do NOT use genuine Group IV or V base stocks. In other words, you're paying for a Group III base stock.

That may not be a problem for you, but it bugs me considering how pricey Royal Purple is. There are plenty of genuine synthetics out there using PAO or ester base stocks: Amsoil, Motul, and Red Line come to mind. I can't justify paying Group IV/V prices for Group III oil.

Besides, for older engines like ours, I would be more concerned about ZDDP concentration than anything else. I'd prefer to run Kendall GT-1 20w50 (1190 ppm Zinc; 1080 ppm Phosphorus) and change it more regularly rather than some semi-synthetic masquerading as full-synthetic with unknown base stock or ZDDP content.

For old German engines like ours, a good argument can also be made for diesel formulations, such as Mobil Delvac 1300 Super, Chevron Delo 400, or Shell Rotella T.

Royal Purple isn't that much better than Mobil 1 imo. Redline is your friend because it has more molly than you know what to do with.

I use it to jerk-off with. I can attest - It's much better than mobile 1.

If its just gimmick oil, which I've always suspected, then thats one thing. But if it actually has worthwhile properties to it, then I'm atleast interested in hearing others thoughts. Sounds like I should just stick with what I know works.

ZDDP. You want it. Royal Purple XPR has lots, the regular Royal Purple line does not, Redline has lots, Mobil 1 15w50 has enough but the other Mobil 1's do not.

I'm using Shell Rotella T 15w40, and have since the engine was fresh. It's the perfect weight and it keeps my head looking new. No brow/tan build-up, just clean, lubricated internals.

my s14 burns a qt of mobil 1 15/50 every 2500 miles. I switch to Amsoil 20/50 and I can go 5k miles and not burn a drop. All of this is driving it like it was meant to be driven 7k rpm shifts and 4k on the freeway. I cant explain why, although someone did explain it to me once. But Its all Ill run in my solid lifter cars now

                            I'm with you, Blunt.

I've been running Amsoil RD50 15w50 race oil in the Cosworth. Like the S14, it's got solid lifters. Hasn't burned a drop of oil in over 3000 miles of mixed street and (very hard) track use.

Amsoil and Redline are the way to go, Mobil 1 if you're in a pinch and can't find the other two. Yes, from everything I've seen, royal purple is a gimmick.
