    Time to KAAZ my e30!!

Mmmm it's time to Kaaz the e30!!

    Japanese LSD WEAPONRY time :)

I have been quite interested in drifting the e30 lately and Tarmac rally, it's time to figure out if I've been missing anything from not having an all out aftermarket LSD unit.

Having ran a kaaz in a few prior cars I am fitting and comparing this 1.5 way kaaz clutch lsd to my own original product: wanganstyle customized Oem LSD

Stay tuned for install photos @ JRD and analysis of Tarmac driving/ Doughnut-ing review.

Will compare driving/drifting characteristics between stock LSD, custom configured stock LSD, and Kaaz aftermarket LSD.

If anyone local has a OS GIKEN unit and would like it tested in my car also to compare please pm :)

Looks like open, is not open!

Will see if I can handle the bump up to 3.15 ratio, as it is the lowest the KAAZ can take.
BMW diff geometry is one setup for 2.65-3.07, a different geometry for 3.15-4.88

Currently the DH e30 is setup with a 2.93 and prior had a 3.07.

Ideal would be 2.65 so I can be WOT all the time and decrease torque the ground for more stability / traction

this unit is LOUD, Noisy. Almost annoying chattering when turning, I believe it has 8 clutches or more.

It only drags a little @ low speed, a decent amount more than OEM ramps+4 clutches when turning.

I took It doughnut-ing and drifting, have not done any tarmac rally type road YET :)

Lift off lock up of the 1.5 way is less aggressive than 4 clutch 2 way on OEM, the 1.5 carries a bit more speed before locking up on limit from ramping, so if turning in on same line so the entry angle has to change and weight shift is different. A bit slower rotation, I was able to choku-dori but the weight transfer is slower with 1.5 way than with 2 way. Had to use more throttle and more steering to shift the weight, with 2 way less steering was involved.

For doughnuts/drifting I think i like 2 way better, Will do some mountain driving and report on that.

too bad there is not a 2 way kaaz :(

                    for drifting, doughnuts:

                    A.
Stock Lsd: works well but does not lock up aggressively under lift off or turn in on throttle/power so you may have to use a EXCESSIVE throttle or clutch kick to go sideways/initiate your drift. Locking is linear on both accel/deccelk and weight swing transitions are slower, so it is easier to start drifting with a stock LSD unit

                    B.
2 way modified stock LSD (4 clutch):

2 way has easy lift off weight transfer, breakaway/locking up is at lower speed than the 1.5 way unit. This is "easier" to initiate turning with because lift off locks the LSD as much as throttle - linear feeling item.

                    C.
                    1.5 way LSD (KAAZ):

activates dougnuts very well on throttle, the locking happens very aggressively on accell- a decent amount more than stock 2 way unit. when going into choku dori (slinging side to side drift with lots of angle) the carry speed with the 1.5 seems higher but its more difficult to force change direction because lifting off has less locking than accell

Kaaz is a beast, have to turn in later and force traction on front tires, end up using the chassis response loading instead of lift (with a 2 way).

                        Up/down hill full attack x1 hour :D

This lockup from 8 clutches feels like I gained a bit more torque on outside wheel like Torsen.

2 way stock Is easier to drive, Kaaz you have to fight at times.

it's going to be killer on the track. Different style!

Wangan, I had a KAAZ also in my 2g GST. I have to drive in figure-8's at low speed for 30min for it to break in, then change the fluid...my co-workers thought I had gone off the deep end when I did it in the p-lot during lunch(picked up the car from the my trans guy that morning).

It did still crunch a bit after that but once it was fully broken in it was a different car.

Is the break-in procedure the same for RWD cars??

yes- for Kaaz and Tomei (built by kaaz) and Cusco / TRD (os giken) the break in procedure is all 20-30 minutes of figure 8's

did your co-workers get any good video of you lol

the noisyness is not as bad as initially, but is aways goign tob e noisy.

KAAZ made a special "quiet" coated setup of clutch discs avail in a "street rebuild" kit; this is popular with FD3S RX7 guys -they have spherical OEM rear bushes so the noise translates nasty and they complain.

the RX7 guys also complain about 2 way spec, and wish for the 1.5 way of my unit.

Guess I will be buying a RX7 KAAZ to reconfigure and swap over the 2 way ramp center from:P the E30/E36 BMW spec KAAZ units are ONLY avail in 1.5 center ramping.

did you have Kaaz Center/front/rear LSD in your DSM? I have never driven a FWD based AWD with heavy duty LSD, always wanted one for my old mitsu-

The GST was the front wheel drive Turbo...When it would start to push through a corner, I just laid in some boost and the diff would lockup and yank the car straight. Very worth it for a high hp FWD, but not an end-all solution. Without the firmer motor mounts(aka windo-weld filled) and decent suspension, the diff wouldn't have been fully utilized.
