    Found a cheap M62tu and 6 speed, now for noob questions

    I've found an M62 and a 6 speed transmission near by for what I believe to be a decent price. My project was destined for an M50tu turbo, but something about the over the top factor of the M62 has me hooked.

    My questions are:

    1. Is it worth it over an M50 turbo? Was looking at goals of over 300 hp with the turbo
    2. What is the most desirable engine? The one I found is from an X5.
    3. How is the wiring? There is no wiring or manifolds with the one I found so I'm guessing OBD I swap is my best bet then just like with an M52?

    If I can sell off my M50 swap parts I will scoop this up, if it sells before then I'll just go ahead with my previous plan. I've done some research about E30.de mounts, subframe spacers, trans braces, remote mounted boosters, driveline angle, etc. and I'm fairly confident this looks to be a decently straight forward swap. More fab work and harder than a simple M50 swap but not as hard as an S54 and much cheaper. I'm not too worried about the weight either as it will sit farther back in the bay and it doesn't seem to be all that heavier than a 24valve from my research.

    If you cant answer those questions already before considering the swap go m50 turbo.

      But that v8 sooouuuuuuund! I already have a daily driver and if turbo 24v doesn't do it, a v8 swap would fill the over-the-top quota for this project.

        X5 manifolds make the thing easy, just modified them on my next E30 V8 project and it took only couple of hourse.

        However, the oilpan & -pump might be very different in X5, and the engine management is quite complicated so it's gonna be pretty complicated altogether.. Basically you'd need to source more or less complete M60 from where you could swap all the parts to the M62 to make it all work.

          Exactly what I thought as I starting reading this. And yep, x5 pan is different, and yep it's obd2 engine so you'll need a bunch of parts to make it into obd1.

            Jean, I was waiting for your input. I guess I should just stay within the original scope of the project. After considering that I'd have to find OBD I wiring, manifolds and a different pan, maybe piecing together a turbo setup for the M50 I already have ready to drop in would be easier and cheaper, and hopefully get the same results.

            Guy wanted $1100 for the engine and trans, btw.

              For 1k that's an AWESOME deal, if he was local I would jump on that and sell either part and get the money back if I wanted to.

              But, you'll get more power with turbo...it really all depends on what you want. For those who are doing this swap, one reason being is not wanting or can not go with FI. V8 is smooth, and has all this torque w/o stressing it one bit and it's fairly light and can get good mpg! Plus it looks so good under the hood and sounds good as you said.

              The minus is, having all the extra work to make it fit and extra needed maint. These engines like to leak when they get old, AIR / OIL...so its a must to reseal it first.

                If I had another thousand to throw at this car right now on something completely out of the plans, I would, but saving for school= car gets bread crumbs. If I can sell my M50 I'd do it, as I wouldn't run it with boost until I rebuild it so either way I'm opening up the engine. If someone steps up and buys my complete M50 swap for enough for me to buy the x5 motor and 540i trans it'll happen. Otherwise I'll just go through with original plan and be happy.

                  OBD 1 M60 wiring for $150 on ebay, different listings but that seems like a good start on an OBD 1 swap...
