    car stalling

hey all, this is probably a simple fix but I would like some help/advice.

my car turns on fine and all and drives great and idles perfectly, but if I were leave the car on idle in the driveway for 5-10 minutes, it starts to choke and idle extremely rough, as if misfiring until it just dies out. upon restarting the car, CEL is on and it does the same thing, unless I rev it up to 3k, then its fine normal again.

also, whenever the car is revved to 4-5k in neutral, it will do the same thing and smoke out the rear, and shut off every time I come to a stop when i move it. the only remedy I find for this is to shift into gear and drive it hard for 10 seconds and it is all normal again.

and last but not least, this same exact problem happens whenever someone else valet parks my car, and when I got my inspection. it passed and all, but whenever I get my car back from whoever else drove it, its always stalling and misfiring and throwing CEL until I can get it on the road and rev up to 4k before shifting, then everything is just perfect again.

I can drive this car to redline no problem whenever I feel like it every couple of weeks and the car idles perfectly so its pretty healthy.

I keep my eyes and ears open around this car so Im always jumping on maintaining it if something ever happens. Maybe one of you have had this problem before, so if anyone has any advice or suggestions I would greatly appreciate it.

    thanks.

My car does this as well, but its an m10. I suspect my plugs wire cap & rotors need a refresh.

Have you ever cleaned out the ICV? It's kinda weird that it idles fine then dies after a while though...

      Is the O2 sensor old?

What CEL code is it throwing?

Also what kind of driving you do, mainly stop and go city?

I would put in a bottle of fuel injector cleaner on your next fill up, use premium gasoline if you aren't, and then take the car out for a nice long drive at night, and once it's warmed up hit the rev limiter. First time I gave my car an Italian tuneup it spewed a little smoke and ran much smoother since.
      Different strokes for different folks.

thanks for the responses so far.

I do a bit of both city and highway, but more so highway and Im around the 3-4k mark in 5th when doing so for around 15 minutes.

Ive cleaned out the icv as best I could before and it is still doing it.

I forgot to mention Ive been running a mark d 93 octane chip for a year, so Ive been using 93 octane premium fuel. I changed out my filters all around the same time.

also, I havent changed the sensor o2 in 2-3 years, but like I said there is no CEL and when it comes on, it quickly goes away once I get going.

I havent checked what code it throws but Il see what it gives me in a while.

Pull the plugs right after it stalls out on you and see if they are wet or smell like gas. Seems to me that it's running just a bit too rich and the excess fuel builds up until it floods the cylinders. Would also explain why turning it to the redline makes it run fine again.

            ^this,

I pulled my plugs and they are soaked, it does the same thing with a new set of plugs shortly after. if it matters, im running NGK BKR6EK if I remember correctly.

So what could cause it to run rich like that? o2 sensor? doesnt seem like that would have had a major impact but I could be wrong.

afm? should I look out for leaky fuel hoses under the hood?

or could it be the 93oct mark d chip I put in a year ago? tbh, I havent noticed my fuel economy go down since I put it in, nor has it improved. im getting like 18mpg every fuel up, which doesnt seem all that good, but its been like that for a few years.

thank you for the responses so far.

Could be any of those things, along with vacuum leaks or a bad coolant temp sensor.
