    Sleep Aids

Anyone have experience with sleep aids?

I'm thinking of trying them because i want to try going to sleep earlier and waking up earlier. Everytime i lay down early to try and sleep before midnight, i just lay there not tired.

But the idea of going to sleep earlier is to wake up earlier to eat more breakfasts and what not.

any bad stories? good stories are welcome as well.

Melatonin. For me personally, I'm just as tired in the morning whether I sleep at 9pm or 1-2am, so I just don't bother.

Why do I have the only mature response in this thread?

What time do you usually wake up? I tried this technique, it's pretty much bulletproof and has been used by many successfully over the years.

              1. Most time consuming step, starts with crawling out of your mothers vagina. You then spend the next 20 or so years making it to adulthood. Some people cut this step short and move straight onto step 2 quite a few years early....good on them.

              2. Obtain a job and/or other responsibilities. These usually require you to put in a moderate amount of effort. As a result, you become tired during the day.

              3. Go to bed

              4. Wake up at a reasonable hour to be able to fulfil the responsibilities you took in step 2. This usually requires you to get up rather early. Fortunately, waking up early to fulfil responsibilities will help you getting to bed earlier. Imagine that.

              5. Stop complaining and forget taking anything. Sleeping at midnight is normal, start worrying when 5am rolls around every night and you have to be up for work in an hour. As for waking up sleepy, you should probably see a doctor if that's the case. I hear that's a sign of something quite serious.

I use melatonin - 3mg @ 30mins before I want to sleep. You also want to spend that last 30 mins away from TV/Computer/anything electronic. I prefer to read a book.

I have a long history dealing with insomnia and I've dealt with everything from melatonin to ambien to morphine to treat it. The latter only being used when I've been awake for 96 hours or more.

I recommend starting light with the melatonin, it can give you some really bizarre dreams, especially if you haven't used it before. 3mg should be plenty and brand doesn't matter.

I also stress not using anything electronic for the last 30 mins before bed, if you do it can lead to your mind staying awake, your body becomes very heavy and your muscles will be sore. Trust me, it sucks, you'll be moving slow all day and it sucks.

At most I would use no more than 9mg if absolutely necessary, too much can cause you to severely shorten your sleep cycle and it'll cost you later in the day.

If you want to sleep pattern on track, the thing that I found that works for me is to force myself not to sleep for a night then the next night go to sleep at the time that you want and set your alarm to wake you up 8 hours later. After a couple of days it'll start feeling natural but you'll be tired as hell. Also turn off your tv/computer at least an hour before sleep.

Agree with the Melatonin part, but only take half the pill until you get use to it. You can have some pretty vivid dreams from taking a high dose.

                        Benadrly works wonders for me.

Find a really boring book. I used to have one that reading one paragraph in bed would induce an eight hour coma.
