    E46 330i Flywheel for M52 swap?

I haven't been able to find the answer through searching, yet, but can a 240mm dual mass flywheel from an E46 be used in lieu of an E36 flywheel?

Car in question has a '97 M52, clutch kit for '97 328i, and ZF tranny and slave from '97 M3.

We accidentally got the 228mm flywheel and can't finish the swap until we get a another one. The only local one is from an E46.

    Thank you in advance!

    Yes and no

E36 240mm pressure plate only bolts to e36/34 dual mass flywheel, the e46 dual mass uses the same pressure plate bolt diameter for both 228 and 240mm setups.

If you have the entire e46 clutch setup (dual mass+self adjusting clutch) it can be directly installed.

You will need a self adjusting clutch tool to get the pressure plate set proper; it's pretty easy to use.

Bolts right on: uses same starter as m52.

If you have a m20 clutch setup it can also bolt on the m52 engine if the flywheel backside has been shaved; this does require the m20 starter to be retained of hybrid frankenstarter assembled from m52/m20 starter bits.

One can also fit the m52 starter ring on the m20; take it to a reputable engine machine shop to have done and balanced

240mm self adjust e46 pressure plate will not bolt on e36 dual mass - it's bolt pattern is same as a 228mm from dual mass e30 325e or e36 323i and 325i and should bolt to a 228mm e36 dual mass although I have never used one in a car before.

Thsnk you very much. Interesting points.

The SAC clutch that we have bolts to both early E36 and E46 flywheels.

The PP that we have for the '97 328i bolts to both, as well, no issues.

The disc diameter for the E46 and late E36 is the same and they both don't fit in the early flywheel.

The E36 PP and disc bolt up to the E46 flywheel no problem, but we are concerned about the depth (step) of the E46 240mm flywheel when using the E36 328i clutch.

      Clear as mud? ;)

        Lol ya. Clear as mud.

        I've ran/driven successfully:

        Complete e46 fly+sac setup from 330 5 speed in e36m3 with s52 engine and stock zfsg320 5 speed

Complete e36m s52 dual mass and clutch kit attached to m20 engine and g260 5 speed

Complete e46 330zhp flywheel and sac attached to: m20 engine and 6 speed zhp transmission

Any other setups I can't really say will work 100% from actual experience. I've played the fit up mix match shuffle but never installed a mix up of pp and flywheel.

        E36 328i/m3 has 240mm
        E46 330 and 328 have 240mm
        E36/46 323 and 325 have 228mm

          Highjacking my first thread....

Sorry to revive such an old thread but it seems relevant,

I have a z4 6 speed box as well as pressure plate flywheel and clutch from a m54b30 z4 so in theory identical to an e46 330i right?

So in theory I can take that and mate it to a m52 and put it in my e30, will that work? Any foreseeable issues and or suggestions for a propshaft?

          Thanks
