    Shifter Slop normal? Vid added for clarification..

    So after replacing every shifting component/ bushing I still have side to side shifter movement while in gear causing notchy 1-2 and 2-3 shifts. So I would like to ask now if this is normal or if there is something else I should be looking at.
    I have replaced everything in the picture below, in addition a DSSR and delrin bushings.

    Umm yeah, I cant find anything else to replace, but I would like to tight smooth shifting?

    I think you're confusing notchiness and slop

    Slop is side to side play; you should have none running a DSSR.
    Notchiness is attributed from the shifter you are running. If you have a short shifter (e34 540i, Z3 1.9, 2.8, Z4/Z4MC) the slick and precise gear change will have notchiness, period. The shorter the lever, the notchier it will be because the nature of the shift geometry requires more user input-force the shorter the shift lever is. (this I personally why I am absolutely against running anything that is shorter than the Z3 2.8, which includes any of the Z4 levers)


    I'm assuming you are running a short shifter seeing as you have put in all this work and have an upgraded DSSR. Are you running the Garagistic Solid Bushings?

      No I mean the side to side.
      And yes, using the Z3 shifter for longer throw :)

          Honestly
          I'm suffering from the same thing; everything OEM replaced brand new and I still have a inch of slop.

          Looking for ideas too

            Never paid attention to it until today, but my car has the same amount of play in the shifter.

              I replaced all those same bushings and I still have a decent amount of slop. Really aggravating doing all that work and your car still feeling so sloppy.

                  Brand new rear carrier and bushing for me
                  I've definitely narrowed it down to something in the shift knuckle or the shift connector. It's annoying because both these parts are 100% nee

                  Mine is much worse than the video; a good inch and a half to the right

                    Well I feel better knowing someone shares my pain. Only thing i can think of is selector shaft seal, which I'm going to check again even though I ruled out before. Don't remember why however.

                      About an inch of sideways play is normal for a shifter in good condition (fresh bushings). It will be a bit more is the stock shift lever is being used. To get less play you have to go to a race shifter, which uses all metal bushings. The disadvantage of a race shifter is that the lever tends to vibrate.
