Yes, you have to flip it.

I'm posting a variation of this question on several threads, so pardon if you've seen this already:

Is this still the case if it's the offset-style CSB carrier on later E30 models? (And using an M3 driveshaft, not a 325i's?)

Just like it is installed on the e30 driveshaft. This means that you don't change the orientation of the CSB, you just simply install it on the back half of the e36 driveshaft. It isn't flipped or anything.

I used a late model 325E/ES driveshaft and installed the bearing the same way the old one was (ie not backwards).

In the process of this: Do you have to use the backing plate and cover plate for the E36 then? I bought the E30 kit from Pelican Parts but the plates that came with it won't work on an E36 driveshaft (with the CSB in the correct orientation).

So... leave them off or will the plates from the E36 (as seen in this pic) work?

if you're using the appropriate e36 driveshaft, the e36 plates will work.

from your pic -I reused both dust covers. one set from an 86 and one set from an 89 on e36m3 4 bolt driveshafts. As mentioned don't 'flip the early CSB since the mounting holes are offset.

Just finished this. The definitive answer for late model E30 318's (at least) using an E36 M3 manual shaft (at least) is:

                      1. Buy the E30 CSB for your year car. These late model E30 318's (among others) have the carrier offset towards the passenger side. (In other words: the short leg of the carrier is on the passenger side.)

                      2. Install the CSB in its stock orientation – not backwards – with the offset on the passenger side.

                      3. *Don't* buy the dust covers / support plates for the E30 CSB, however. Instead, buy the E36 versions (part #s 26 11 1 226 552 & 553, IIRC). Circlip is the same for both, I believe.

                      4. Don't forget to preload the CSB!

^+ The e30 CSB dust shields will not sit flushly on the e36 shaft. I pressed my CSB on with a floor jack, ropes, and some PVC piping, but as long as the bearing itself it pressed on evenly you should be all set.
