    Grocery status. E46 sedan

Recent holiday acquisition: 2002 325i sedan manual. Its neither wangan or tarmac status; this is a grocery status build.

Purchased with dying clutch; its getting a non self adjusting 240mm s52 dual mass and clutch set this weekend. Hopefully much more gripforce compared to the e46 228m SAC unit and some rotational weight loss.

M54b25 is a really light efficient engine; torque band is square; it revs quite fast. Perhaps the oem slick piston termal coatings are doing the job!

Also built a tarmac spec 2 way 60% lockup billet LSD in 3,46 ratio diff for it. Metalic clutch discs should be nice for an occasional smoke show between prius' ss.

Should be a nice bump from the standard 3,15 open.

Have fun with the 3.46 rear end. D: I did a 5 speed swap on my e46 touring. It came stock with 3.46 gears. You'll be at about 3,000 rpm cruising at 60.

I'm running a 3.46 final in my e36 m3 5 speed. It works for me everyday as the standard 3.23 is just too long; I'll fit some 18's if desired later

3.15 is nice for cruising but the prius crowding here in the bay area never allows for efficient cruising.

Wow, that LSD must not have been cheap! When I first got my e46, I was hoping I could easily swap in a LSD from another model, but came to find out that I had to build one. Really expensive to say the least. With the clutch you are installing, that will get rid of the mushy feel the stock one has, correct?

Yes; its a cnc billet lsd: the one for my e46 is drift/tarmac spec. Pictured cutaway unit is stock 25% oem bmw spec.

3 piece design allows for install without milling/ clearancing of the 188k kompact diff case; something that has always bothered me in building e46 non m lsd's

The stock m54 clutch pressure plate is the cause of all hatred: its auto adjusting and can jam/fail. Its also a soft pressure plate for grandma ok use.

the s52 usa dual mass is 22lbs. Pressure plate pattern 240mm larger size standard shared with m30b35 and s38b36. Its very easy going in daily traffic also.

Nice man, I've always thought the facelifted sedan was the best looking plebian E46. You are nutso slapping a 60% lockup diff on that thing! The 40% lockup I have on the 330 is almost too much for street tires.

Thanks -e46 sedan facelift is a really good buy right now.

                LSD setting variability....:p

the thing In your e30/46 (same actual part in your case) can be tuned drastically different than imagined if the budget is there for the operation.

fact #1 about custom lsd; its custom and should be built for the driver+ actual car its going into. This was setup for 190hp of rage.

Ugly girls can look beautiful after enough time in Korea for plastic surgery.

                *****************************
People who setup 3 disc units are usually keeping preload springs. This is what overloads tires and causes weird noises that some say is cool. I don't build 3 disc units; I prefer stock 2 disc or 4 disc unsprung as the turn in is better.

I dont like preload springs and delete them for circuit spec cars.

This e46 unit is much milder with only 4 discs but tuned for the 3300lbs weight. Bellevue setup not standard like yours.

Spec e30 cheating 4 clutch disc setup has 0 preload and the static breakaway is........0. Race units are setup with no Bellevue washers.

Static Break away with your hands but 60% lockup with 4 discs 2 way- theres one of my cutaway demo units at edge motorworks mountainview setup as such if you would like to see it working.

Its cut in half with stubs installed; one can turn right and left wheels opposite by hand when static; when torque comes through the ring gear it locks on wheel speed delta.

I like this thread. So, differentials are your specialty, by means of a daily 8-5, or this is just something you picked up on the side?

I created a 3 piece billet lsd from scratch; it uses genuine BMW dealer internals and setting to handle OEM.

Standard setup is just like ordering a 0 mile e30 m3 or e36 m3 lsd from bmw- grandma can drive it and so can you on track.

Full race and custom everything is also in stock. 2 way high lock for tarmac rally is what has been built for my e46 grocery status; 1.5 way and 1.0 way ramps are also in stock as well.

I'm sometimes found at the racetrack instructing or open lapping for practice and this sedan will be a fantastic sleeper to pass faster cars in open lapping days.

Heres the evolutionary photo process and solution to the need for a purpose made 3 piece unit.

Too many compromises were required to retrofit an existing older unit; this lead to my Billet Cnc hard anodized wanganstyle 3 piece design to avoid any compromise to the case housing and ease of install.

Anyone selling a retrofitted differential will be compromising strength compared to a purpose designed item; the 188k kompact design is pretty limiting; most aftermarket units still require clearancing of the case housing; something only a specalist will dare to mess with. The potential liability is nasty

Out of curiosity, do you build these for selling purposes as well? And what would be an approximate price for one?

I mostly wholesale these to diff building professionals but can build complete custom units to order.

Cost is competitive with all popular e46 non m aftermarket options. (Costs alot)
