Odometer dosent work with new gears

    Hey everyone,
My E30s odometer didn't work when I bought it so I took it apart and found that the odometer gears were cracked and worn out so I replaced them, but when I put it all back together the odometer still didn't work. When I turn the small gear for the odometer the odometer numbers moved so I belive that the gears we're put together right. Any suggestions on what might be happening?

    Thanks,
    Jack

This isn't going to help you at all but after replacing my odometer gears my odometer behaved the same way. A few days later it started working properly. My only thought is that something wasn't seated properly and I was lucky enough for it to settle itself.

I'd suggest pulling your cluster and just confirming everything is seated as it should be.

One of two things is happening. Either the first or last drive gears are slipping on their shafts or the odometer section of the speedometer isn't working. The first case is unlikely if you used quality gears and installed them properly.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Thanks for the tip! Although I have had it apart and looked it over multiple times and it all seemed to be right. It is a VDO gauge cluster that the previous owner must have replaced because "86" is written on it in a few places and my car has a build date of 84. Could this gauge cluster not work in my car or could the motor for the odometer be dead?

Is there any way to fix the odometer section of the speedometer?

Another thing I've heard of is the screws which hold the back of the gauge on being overtightened. Apparently this can create extra pressure on the odometer gear assembly and keep them from working. That said, I had a similar experience to SlamedIAm where the gears worked intermittently for the first 100 or so miles and then worked perfectly afterwards.

I got a free gauge cluster yesterday and put it in and now the odo works!
