screech/rubbing noise after timing belt swap m20 ?

Just got everything back together after swapping out the timing belt. Right when I turn it on I hear a screeching noise. Thought it was the alternator or steering belt but not sure so I only ran it for a few sec.

Question is how do I know if its the timing belt? I'm pretty sure I lined it up correctly. What are signs that timing is off?

should know that I was able to turn the crank by hand before starting the engine.

For a 100% accurate diagnosis, remove the alternator, A/C and power steering belts and try running the car again for a minute or so. NOT TOO LONG since the water pump would not be turning.

Turn the p/s pump, water pump, A/C compressor and alternator by hand and see how those items feel.

If the noise is gone with the V belts off, replace the belts one by one until you find the culprit.

Take off the V-belts and fire up the engine. If the noise is still there it from the timing belt or tensioner.

Yea I was thinking about it last night. I think I'll try without the v belts thanks.

Was wondering if I should have double checked the timing by rotating the crankcase bolt by hand for a few revolutions.? Also wasn't sure what I would see if the timing was off by a tooth?

After installing the belt you need to rotate the crank through two revolutions with the tensioner free to move stopping when the mark on the crank hub lines up with the V-notch in the inner lower timing cover, then check the cam marks to make sure the cam is in time, then lock down the tensioner.

So if I didn't hand turn the crank after swapping out the belt what should I do at this point?

Remove the pulley, harmonic balancer, distributor, and timing covers. Unlock the tensioner and rotate the engine until the mark on the crank hub lines up. If the cam marks line up, lock down the tensioner and put everything back together.

The cam timing being off won't cause the noise you describe. That will be a bad bearing (you did replace the tensioner, right?) or something rubbing. So when you pull the timing covers check for signs of rubbing.

So I took everything apart...timing lines up and I loosened and tightened the tensioner. Now to put everything together again to see where the noise came from :/
