Odd Check Light Issue... or not... no clue.

Okay so here is the deal 87 325e cel (center dash orange) stays on. No flashing never did. There are lights on my check panel the coolant which is just shy of the sensor, and the washer fluid thanks to breaking the sensor off the side... anyway how is this thing suppose to work? One more thing when I pulled cluster to check bulbs and batteries and what not, I saw the whole for the actual check engine light but there is no bulb on harness that should go there just abs light... I've heard of the cluster not having the hole but mine has a spot for bulb and no bulb? 11/86 is the build year. Thanks

On an eta, there is no check engine light or bulb in that position in the cluster.

What you're seeing in the center of the dash is a flashing "check" light that tells you to look up at the check panel on the roof. It tests the brakelights on every start, so it will flash when the car is started and will stay flashing until you depress the brake pedal. Assuming everything else is working, the check light will go out. If it stays on, something else on the roof panel should also be lit. The "check" light will not flash.

Only the "i" cars had an actual check engine light in 1987.

Fix whatever the roof check panel is telling you and the check light will resume operating as it should.

Thanks for clarifying on the "cel" the thing I'm concerned about is the "check" light does not "flash" it comes on with the key and is solid. It never has flashed once. Always a steady light. Everywhere I've searched (and boy have I searched) the only report is a flashing check light that is there like you said to look at my check panel to see what red lights are lit. I'm hoping however someone as seen this solid light issue before.
