    No crank

    Hi guys,

The starter of my car was acting up. It won't crank so I decided to buy a rebuilt one from ebay (starters-alternators) seller. After installation it works fine and starts right up but sometime it will have a weak crank and just now it won't crank anymore. The rebuilt starter only last 6 days. My battery is relatively brand new and I also replace my ground cable (engine to body).

So my question is, the culprit could be the starter alone? or can you suggest other things to check?

    Thanks in advance.

    Sounds like a bad alternator.

Get a volt meter and check the voltage before and during cranking. It could also be the alternator regulator too.

Battery sounds suspicious. Test it. "New" doesn't always mean "good", perhaps you have a parasitic drain somewhere. Alternator belt could also be loose, and not charging properly also. Does the battery light ever come on?

A buddy of mine pushed the car and it start up. I checked the battery voltage 13.68. I went for 20 mins ride and check again the voltage and it's 13.50. I turned off the car and switch on, still no crank. Could ignition switch is a possible cause? Any more suggestions?

Does your relay click when you switch to "on"? Does the starter turn? Check the power cable to the starter to make sure that it has 12V. Check the ground cable from the starter to the body (I know that you said it was a new cable, but check the contact points for good grounding). I would make sure that those work before looking at the ignition switch.

Turns out the new starter has an electrical short on the solenoid. We just changed the carbon brass of my old starter and put it back in. Now its working fine. Thanks for all you suggestions really appreciate it.
