Random check engine light cannot stomp test

    Hey r3v,

89 325i/92 m50b25nv wired together at the c101 connector using the m20 pieces.

My check engine light came on last night after hitting a puddle of water in the road. The car started to idle hunt a minute later at a stop light, and the check engine light came on. I drove to a friends house with the light on the whole way. 20 minutes later I got back in my car to find the check engine light still on. While driving home on the interstate the light went off and came on multiple times at random intervals without any change in throttle position, load, or rpm. When I got to the off ramp and stopped at the stop sign at the end of it the light was on, when I took off and hit WOT in second gear between 3-5k rpms the light went off and stayed off for about a minute, then popped back on all the way home.

    flash to this morning

This morning I got in my car to find the check engine light still on from last night, so at least the ecu is storing codes. I drove the car to the interstate and hit full throttle again for maybe 10 seconds or so, the light promptly went off and stayed off for the rest of my 15 minute commute. and that's where I'm at right now.

stomp test doesn't work and my check engine light is on with no real reason why long after any sensor should have dried off

so any incite would be super helpful

    thanks, cameron

you can also read bmw obd1 codes with a good scanner, it will read the stored codes, then you will know what code it was.

The stomp test requires the TPS to register WOT. I wonder if your TPS is acting up?

has the stomp test worked for you before? in my experience you have to start stomping immediately after turning the key to the on position. it didnt work for me when i waited a second before commencing the stompage

It worked with the m20 in the car just not after the m50 swap.
