    Aluminum Coolant Expansion tank

    Hi all,

I wanted to find out if anyone has used an off-the-shelf aluminum coolant expansion tank in place of the stock late model piece.

I'm aware of the E30M3/early E30 model styles available, which would place the expansion tank on the battery box area. I'd like to keep it in the stock location.

Has anyone found something like this that fit?

    Thanks

Pointless; Go to the dealer and order a genuine OEM brand new late model bottle.
its about $120; 2 year warranty

I've used a NEW one with S52 and S54 in multiple cars and in the enduro e30; never had a failure.

The late model e30 bottle is the most reliable bottle that BMW has ever made; carried all the way untill 1998 in europe (e36 m3 3.2 evolution s50b32)
    OBD1 M54/M52TU swap as a M50b25

Z4 non powered steering rack fits e30

    Euro e46 2005/6 320d 6mt gearbox into E30 with M20 hardy and beck 1985 327s engine

There's a warranty?! I bought mine from Pelican (genuine bmw) in May and now there is a leak where the top half and lower half are molded together. It's literally separating. What pressure cap do you recommend using Wanganstyle? E30 or E36M3?

Buy the cap that matches the engine you are using.

        i.e.:

        s52 e36 is + e30 late model bottle (with european e36 brackets to mount) + 1998 M3 (s52) cap;

e39 / e36 / e30 late model share the cap standard; there are a few different pressures of cap avail.

Parts purchased from the BMW parts counter have a 2 year warranty; just keep your paperwork; things like the plastic bottle and Fuel pump assembly are good ideas to pay a premium on.

If you purchased it from pelican they should also take care of you; I know that Autohaus AZ will warranty items; I killed a z3 s54 radiator in 5 months time and sent it back for a new replacement.

Yes oem bmw parts are covered under warranty it's really quite nice to be able to just bring it back to the dealer if there's any issue, or some online venders offer their own warranty past the 2 bmw warranty. I've always used e30 caps with no issue.

The e30 late model M20 cap Looks the same as a S52 e36 M cap but the pressure rating is DIFFERENT.

Match pressure to your installed engine (I would guess that in this 24V swap forum it would likely require the E36 cap that matches the transplanted engine)

lower of pressure rating + higher pressure rating engine = blow off water over time; if you are running extended periods on the race track like OP does in summer heat - NO BUENO

On a track car I can see opting for the higher pressure cap but so far I have yet to see a good condition stock e30 cooling system keep it together on the street. But if your buying a new one might as well

                Pressure of M20b25 = 1.4 BAR
                Pressure of S52b32 cap = 2.0 BAR

30% difference is not a small margin to be risking an engine on.

spend $20? or spend on a replacement S52b32?

My stock original s52b32 has $4k+ fed into it; would cost me similar+++ to obtain one as good as it

Might work in a east coast state where the temps are not insane.

Tracks here will be static 100+ degrees in the summer

                  Aluminum Coolant Expansion tank

It's my track car and daily driver. I've been using the 98 M3 2.0 bar cap. Cap hasn't failed, expansion tank is now the one failing

                  Thanks for the feedback wanganstyle

Does anyone know the volume of a stock late model tank?

I have early model e30 aluminum expansion tanks available now. I've also got 25 sets of the later style back from the laser cutter. Hopefully I will have them ready to sell in a few weeks. They are all pressure tested and guaranteed for life.

Tank looks nice, maybe a little expensive for what it is (though I realize the labor involved to make it), but bumping a 5 year old thread just to plug your product?

                        Not cool.

yeah, sounds like a nice product - but maybe start your own thread for it..
