    M52.....jumped timing, but how??

    Hey r3v, I have an M52b25 in my E34. Was refreshed about 5k mi before I bought it @ 55k mi....yes, that's right.

Anyway, I hopped in to go to work yesterday, cranked it for a second as I usually do as it kicks on almost immediately everytime. It kicked a bit this time like a didn't hold it long enough, thought nothing of it. Turned it again and it spun like I was performing a compression test, as in virtually no resistance as if all of the plugs were out....visions of bent valves are dancing in my head at this momet.

    Here's where it's a bit scary

Yes, it's off that far...how, have no idea. Ran out of time this morning to go any further. Haven't checked the tensioner but as I turn the motor(very easily) it seems ok, but i'll pull it tomorrow.

Any suggestions how this might have happened?

Chain guides or the M52 Tensioner sticking. The M52 tensioner is shit. Most of the time youre better off with an M50 one, S52 prefered

Yup...JUST got it timed up last week and tested to today...across all (6) was anywhere from 50-70psi.

Would be replacing just the valves be ok, that is if the seats aren't marred? Think the guides are ok?

That is actually not very far off at all. I bet you could turn the crank back to where it lines up, even with the cams locked.

If you only turn the crank back, sure it might line up correctly, but then you have slack in the chain on the wrong side.

OP, did you say you only had it timed a week before? Is it possible that it was timed wrong?
Otherwise, I would suspect your tensioner died or something. Is it possible the gear on the exhaust side was not tightened correctly?

Just like you might have thought, its not really possible to jump time with a chain, unless things are super worn (which is not likely).

Your best bet is to replace the damaged valves and have the seats machined. You dont want to have to do the job again.
The valve guides will be fine.

No on the (1) week before. I RE-TIMED it 1 week ago, this is after it had already jumped, wanted to do a compression test to make sure.

It's looking more and more like the tensioner, exhaust gear was tight...I'll take the motor out, get it home and torn down after I finish taking down the M50nv I just picked up as a stroker-core. I'll be using the OBD2 stuff/oil pump/waterpump/etc(all the new stuff) from this smacked up M52 for the 3.0l I have in the works.

I'll get the head done and keep it as a spare...

so let me get this right. It somehow jumped one tooth and the compression is now 70PSI across the board?? so all the valves hit?

Seems so....i'm being pressured to finish stripping the car. So by next week I should have it at home to pull the head.

oh btw, 'bullshit asshole, no one like's the tuna here!!'
