    FT/FS: 1998 540iA looking for a E36 M3 (manual), or $4k [IN]

    VIN: WBADE6326WBW63263
1998 [8/98] Arctic Silver 540iA, Black Leather Interior
    4.4L M62B44 (282 hp, 310 lb-ft) and 5 speed automatic
Purchased end of May 2008 with ~75k miles.
Now has 141,4xx miles on it.
Located on the northside of Indianapolis, IN

    Why is it for sale?
I needed a daily capable of towing a LeMons racecar so I bought a X5 that has replaced my 540iA for getting to work. I’d also like to make space for a nice weather / trackday E36 M3. The E39 registration is due at the end of May, so I’d like to sell it by then if possible.

    Overview:
It’s a 17 year old car, but generally clean and just some typical exterior imperfections at this age. It is mechanically strong and a great drive and the interior is in nice condition. It has been a fun commuter, comfortable as well as reliable. Clean title in hand, recent checkout by CarMax didn’t reveal any accidents or other issues.

    Maintenance / Modifications / Features:
Some of the work was done in independent shops but the majority was done by me which I’ve recorded into an Excel file. I’ve mostly upgraded components to be from the factory sport package or with more durable and high quality aftermarket alternatives
-- Came with a set of Style 33s that were all bent, so recycled them and bought Style 29s for snows. (Blizzak WS70s in 205/60-16, with two at 7/32” and two at 8/32”)
-- Bought a set of Style 66s and put 235/45-17 Michelin Pilot Super Sports on which provided a great deal of grip. (Two brand new and one at 7/32” and one at 8/32”)
-- Koni yellows w/ OEM sport springs
-- EAC Tuning HD thrust arm bushings, replaced front swaybar links & steering center track rod assembly (includes inner tie rods)
-- Did Valley Pan Gasket and related seals, Crankcase Vent, Cleaned Intake Manifold, etc.
-- Replaced radiator with Zionsville Autosport all-aluminum one, radiator hoses done
-- Water pump and thermostat August 2011 at 106.5k
    -- Magnaflow 46105 replacement cats
    -- Replaced rear brake lines
-- New plain Brembo rotors + Hawk Performance Ceramic pads
    -- New battery in 2012
-- Blackstone labs oil testing at each change shows good engine health, regular use of injector cleaner, etc.
-- TEC Cupholder and added sliding / opening armrest
Comes with a cassette player in the dash and 6 CD changer in the trunk
Has heated front seats and steering wheel, front/side/head airbags
    Power seats/headrests, nonsports
    Sunroof, headliner in good shape
    Winter front floormats

    The not-so-great:
-- Some pixels out on cluster
-- Some cracks in wood trim near shifter, on tape deck cover
-- Small rust bubble under license plate
-- Passenger rear door had a small ding (from someone else's door)
-- Very low speed tap left front plate philips head screw marks in rear bumper (only incident I've experienced)
-- Small scuffs from roof rack on driver side of roof
-- Hood is a little dull, with an odd corner on the passenger side, rock chips, etc.
-- Side skirt on passenger side dented in the middle, smaller one on driver side by jackpad
-- Driver side fender liner ‘chewed’ a bit
-- Driver-side of the front bumper is not properly fastened (hitting tall cement parking block) - will fix
-- Crack on bottom of front bumper on driver side (see previous point), but have to be under the car to see it
-- Steering rack squeals, especially when cold
-- Small amount of oil leaking
    -- Intermittent coolant leaking
-- Windshield washer pressure is low
    -- Headlight need leveling adjustments

    What I’m looking for:
I’d be looking for a decent shape E36 M3 manual, one that is reasonable condition so that I wouldn’t be embarrassed to be seen in rolling into work. However, the focus would be a fun 3 season car and be able to track it. When I first got the 540iA, I had an E30 that I used for track and 3 season driving, so I got something more plush and with an auto so I didn’t have to do all the driving on roadtrips with my non-manual-driving-friends. Now I’m looking for an E36 track car to go alongside the X5 while being more streetable than our LeMons racecar. Hopefully I can find a trade of someone going for a more comfortable daily or just sell it outright. KBB puts it around $4000 in this condition and that would be my asking price, obo.

If you have any questions, please reply or send me a PM. Also if you want more specific pictures, let me know. I can also line up a pre-purchase inspection at an independent shop if you'd like. I'm not generally in a rush and still enjoy it, it's just that I'd also much rather than a M3 stick to enjoy on the weekends and this go to someone who would appreciate it as much as I would the M3.

Monthly bump. Not in a rush - it is just chilling in my garage and I take it out on the weekends occasionally, but eventually want a track E36 M3.
