    2.8L M20 - track brake question

    I am building a E30 track/fun car with a 2.8L M20, goal is 200 bhp at the wheels. Is there any need to upgrade the brakes to a BBK ? On my E30 M3, I am running stock brakes, stoptech lines, carbotech XP8, bimmerworld titanium backing plates, brass guides, Motul fluid, no rotor backing plates and I have no issues at VIR. The stock E30 brakes are smaller hence my question. Thanks for your input.

    You should be good with PFCs and good fluid. (nitpicking here--bhp means at the flywheel, not at the wheels). Remove the backing plates and/or get some brake ducts if it's a particularly high speed track--no idea how fast VIR is.

      Plenty of track cars with that power do just fine on the stock equipment. Good pads and fluid, ducting for good measure. That said, if you go often enough, a kit like BBK's will save you money on consumables. It's an inexpensive pad and rotor, and it's lighter. VIR's not that hard on brakes really, plenty of time between the two hard braking zones to allow them to cool.

        At $120 an axle for E30 PFCs I doubt a bbk will ever save you any money.

          You're right there. I didn't know the PFC's were that cheap. The only track pads I ever bought for stock calipers were Pagid's, and they were pricey.

            good pads + good fluid and a well maintained system are more than enough for 200hp.

              OK, stock brakes it is with the mentioned upgrades, looking at CarboTech or Performance Friction, they are both within 30 minutes of me

                  Build

                  Nothing crazy on the 2.8L build, using a M50 84 mm crankshaft and rods, having WOT rebuild the head, Schrick 284/272 cam and valve springs, custom exhaust and searching for equal length/long tube headers, will emphasis mid range power

                    I have run VIR in my 87 325i with an M50 swap. I ran on stock rotors and calipers with DTC-60 brake pads.
                    Other than this, I would recommend ducting to cool the brakes.
                    Get a good fluid. I like Motul 600.

                    Brakes only slow you down ;)

                        Good point about ducting..I ran a e30 S50 setup and stock brakes were impressive! My car was light though ..stock rotors/hawk pads/IX brake booster/e34 master cylinder

                          I run UUC big brake kit along with brake ducts. It stops like crazy. best track upgrade I did on my e30 s50
