    Belinda the Black Sedan

About 2 weeks ago I picked up a 91 auto e30 for $850. The tires were worn out and it "needed some work".

I drove it home an found there was a massive coolant leak seemingly coming from the back of the transmission that needed to be hunted down. Getting a little ahead of myself there are no images of the tear down. With the intake manifold off, coolant leak was discovered coming from the additional heater core thermostat/engine block from a number of different hoses. During the tear down one of the intake manifold gaskets came out in two pieces and the brake booster vacuum line to the intake boot was not properly attached. Explains the rough starting and rich idle.

Now with everything cleaned up, and a freshly painted valve cover... I have to wait... For parts... But that gives me time to adjust the valves while the cover is off.

With the intake already off I decided to rebuild/clean my injectors while I am in there.

    July 9, 2015:

Parts came in Tuesday and the motor is back together and running. New wheels got balanced this morning and will be put on later tonight. Will post pictures tonight.

There is a clunking coming from the rear end which I'm assuming is from the subframe/trailing arm bushings. I'm looking at the revshift rear kit and am wondering, on a stock height car with plans to lower, would it be better to go with the standard height bushings or with the kit that raises the subframe and spaces the diff down?

    December 9, 2015:

The coolant leak was not completely solved by the new hoses as there was a leak in the heater core that I found at the start of summer. Being summer I was not too worried about needed heat and just bypassed the heater core in the engine bay for summer. After deciding I didn't want to chance a used core failing on me I bought the BEHR core from pelican. Installation was very straightforward and I also replaced all of the o rings on the coolant lines. So far so good and the heat works great.

Going to be taking the cluster apart and replacing burnt out bulbs as well as attempting to fix my gas and coolant temp gauges as they aren't working too great currently.

Still saving up for a 5 speed swap and 3.73 LSD. I would like to replace most of the bushings while doing the swap. I have read mixed reviews about revshift's bushings, any one care to share their experiences with them?

    How she's currently sitting

    March 18, 2016:

Purchased a full 5 speed swap from a local out of his '86 eta parts car. Working on putting a list of seals, bearings, and bushings together so that I can replace what I need to before the swap commences.

I am leaving for the formula hybrid competition next week and need to move into my new house before I leave. So the swap will have to wait until I return from that.

While preparing for the swap I removed the A/C as I have never really been a fan of it and it didn't work that well anyhow. As well as I discovered some extensive carbon scoring on the distributor cap and rotor. Luckily the guy I bought the transmission swap from happened to have a used one in good condition so I purchased that from him as well.

Will update with pictures as the swap begins.

It's been a while since I've posted. As I'm on a student budget things are moving slowly.

In May I managed to get the transmission swapped in a shop with a lift that I have access to. Ended up having to replace the center support bearing as well as the reverse switch. Took about 3 days but managed to get it all done. the upper bell housing bolts are the biggest pain.

The swap did not come with the shifter boot or shift knob, still haven't sorted that out. Got used to shifting with the bare rod so that will get figured out when I get around to it. Might 3d print one and put a delrin rod in it for strength.

I hoped on the poly train yesterday and purchase the full setup from revshift for the e30 on the Black Friday sale. 80A for the motor, transmission, and diff. 95A for the RTAB, Subframe, and offset control arm bushings. Hoping to get them installed around christmas time. Looking at putting the stoptech brake kit and stainless steel lines on it at the same time as my brakes are starting to wear out.

Will update with first impressions as well as a long trip update as I need to drive 11 hours back to school after christmas.

Over Christmas I received my Bushings From RevShift as well as a shift knob, leather boot, and stainless steel brake and clutch lines from Garagistic.

For a quick comment, I got fantastic customer service from both of these companies and would recommend both of them to anyone. The poly bushings from RevShift took a few weeks but as I ordered during the Black Friday sale that is to be expected.

The Garagistic parts, the shift knob and boot, were great quality for the price and the weighted knob makes shifting feel amazing. I have yet to get the stainless steel brake and clutch lines in but the quality seems to be good.

I only had time over christmas to get the RevShift offset front control arm bushings, and engine and transmission mounts installed. I cannot say enough about these. I went with the green Street/Track compound and haven't noticed any more NVH from the front end. What I have noticed is that the steering wheel no longer shakes at higher speeds and feels much more connected to the road (Might have something to do with the 25 year old bushings that were replaced). The engine and transmission mounts added a very small amount of NVH at idle. They are butter smooth once moving, my only gripe with them is the lack of any documentation on the orientation in the car. I will be installing the Rear Diff bushing hopefully sometime in the next few weeks and the rest of the bushings this summer.

I have an internship with Tesla this summer and will be funneling some of that money into my car. On top of getting the rest of the bushings installed shes getting a built 2.9L engine from Bimmerheads with a Haltech keeping her from exploding. Depending on how things are looking I will also be getting some CA Tuned Coilovers and a WaveTrac Differential.

I'll get some photos of the FCAB's next time I have her on the lift.

She has now also been named Belinda.

Belinda is doing well, still have hopes and dreams for big engines and other things. But for now things are staying as they are. Got rebuilt/new calipers and a larger master cylinder for the brakes installed this summer with solid steel brake lines except for the ones above the rear subframe because I need to remove that to do them and have not had the time. Bought the 91 Octane tune from sssquid which has be fantastic and I have zero complaints with. Here's how she's sitting right now with the new roof racks too.

Got it dyno'd today to get a baseline of the power so that I can actually see what my time and money get me once I get around to building the engine.
