    Alpina Shifter Knob - Auto

Sorry for my first post to be a question...

I bought an 87 325i convertible as a parts car. Im an Aussie and this was a Japanese import LHD that someone imported and had left for 3 years before deciding to move it on as they couldn't license it. I bought it for the sports leather seats, Racing dynamics wheels and the Alpina steering wheel it had.

It also came with this shifter on the auto. Basically you slide the bottom section up to shift the auto. It doesn't look home made. The wood on both sections match so does the stain. The metal pieces all fit precisely and appear to be professionally machined. The steel has also been blued (I think that is the finish). So it doesn't look like someone has converted an Alpina manual knob.

The timber has split, and PO used superglue to try and fix it. I will fill it with a sandable epoxy that I use to fill gum lines on woodworking projects.

I have not been able to find any reference to it in my google searching, so I was wondering if anyone has seen it before.

    Cheers

    Clint

The only Alpina shift knobs I've seen on an E30 are the mushroom top ones for the manuals. I can't say I've seen an Auto knob.

The stickers make it go faster. :nice:

Could be legit. Seems that most of the E30's in Japan are automatics.

too bad someone did such a bad job of glueing it back together.

i have seen a shift knob like that before but it didn't have the alpina logo in the center. i'm not sure the logo fits the center correctly? raul will see this thread and render a verdict. you might also call susan at ksk alpina. she is a wealth of knowledge.

to be sure, that is genuine mahogany and it is a pretty piece.

to restore it, sand the wood down and clean the glue out of the crack. find a filler that is the right color. you might have to buy a lighter color and a darker one and mix them together.

thanks for the replies. I hadn't noticed it was off centre before. Im travelling for work at the moment so will check it out when I get back.

If you can believe it, the PO used a band aid to insulate one of the horn connections inside his alpina steering wheel. So a bit of superglue doesn't surprise me.

I have some epoxy filler that i use to fill gum veins on furniture projects I do, so I will use that, which shouldnt stand out to bad. Luckily the superglue didn't really stick to it, so I have managed to break it off with a dental pick.

yeh that was what I was thinking. The button on my shifter is broken, so it saves me having to fix it :)

I have never seen one and never seen one list on Alpina catalog for Automatic shift knob.

Flyboyx is right to check with Susan at KSK Alpina.
