    Synthetic in a 1987 325 - oil related questions.

Well, it needs an oil change.

My dad says it'll be ok switching to some 5w-30 Mobil 1. And, I'm assuming it will? Anything I should do before this? I have a new oil filter standing by, so I'm good there.

Also, he says it's ok to put in 5 quarts - even though the car manual says about 4.5 quarts. So, what should I do there?

Also, my friend says I should sea-foam before I change my oil, even though my dad says otherwise and that I should talk to the Hurless Brothers here in town. And that I don't need to since it has had regular changes since it's first owner. He also drives a different car - a 1994 Accord.

Suggestions welcome asap, since I'd like to to this this afternoon.

    Thanks!

    Dont bother switching to synthetic.
First off, unless you have VERY low mileage, it will only cause the car to begin to leak oil.

Dino oil is non-unoform in molecule size. Synthetic is uniform which allows it to slip into seals better. This will cause you're older and tired seals to begin to leak.....

Stay with Dino, and just keep changing the oil every 3k with a new filter.
    Below the radar...

My '84 318i has over 170k miles on it and I use full synthetic on it (AMSoil). Absolutely no oil leaks and improved gas mileage by 3mpg.

well, we switched. 5w-30 in tehre right now.

We'll see how it does. I'll be keeping an eye on it.

WE put all five quarts in, looks to be ok. We drove it about 10 miles already. Running pretty well. :)

This has 161,355 to be exact on miles.

I dont drive in winter, but I was last year with non synthetic oil and I started using Mobile one, since I changed all the gaskets, valve seals, etc.
