    WTB Getrag 262 CR (dogleg)

I know they are rare as hens teeth but I am looking for a functioning Getrag 262 CR for my Euro '80 635CSi. I am going to try to get mine rebuilt but finding someone capable and with parts will be challenging and expensive. If you have any leads (tranny or restorer) it would be appreciated. Thanks! Dave

PS I am in the SF Bay Area

If you cant find one. Metric mechanic is only place state side that can do it. And yes it will run you a good deal of money. More then a used one.

Thanks, I have a message into Metric Mechanic and Jim Blanton (not sure he is still doing rebuilds but he replaced the selector shaft about 5 years ago).

H&B in Berkeley also claim they can do it.

I have also heard rumor thay Pete's Gear Shop in Hayward can do it.

Also, of course MM will claim they are the only ones in the country who can do the job, for 3x the price of a typical gear shop.

What's wrong with your trans anyway?

It has a loud whine through all the gears & also makes a klunky sound. Brought it to a trusted mechanic (BavPro in Berkeley) when they drained it, there were metal shavings in murky fluid. It has 250k miles on it. Still goes through the gears and functions but towed it to the shop.

I have a message in at Pete's to ask and will also reach out to H&B. Thanks, Dave

              Rebuilder

I spoke with Pete @ Pete's Gear Shop. He came highly recommended by someone who has used him extensively. He can rebuild it and has a German contact for parts. He has another on his bench now. He has a backlog so I am going to drop a 265/5 in it for now and have him rebuild the original. Will follow up with results. Still would be interested in a "spare" if anyone has leads. Thanks, Dave

What's the going rate for one of these transmissions?

Depends a lot on condition, mileage, location. I have seen from $750-2,600. From my perspective for a proven tranny (e.g. I have driven it and reasonable confidence on mileage). Somewhere between $1200-1600. A lot considering I bought my Europe 635CSi with 125k mileage for $4k!

Looks like my dogleg may not be rebuildable so back to the search. Thanks

Many of the parts are shared with G265 and G260
I built a Grp A G265 close ratio racing box earlier this year and the parts were still avail after extensive search.

What is actually wrong with your box? unless you destroyed a clutch fork or shift rod or similar weird specific to g262 NLA part there is no reason it cannot be fixed.

rebuild cost in parts alone is a pretty horrid thing; the bearings are all avail from BMW new as are the syncronizers and other parts.

And believe it or not all BMW bearings are FAG so you could get the bearing diameter and probably get it direct from them for half the price. I just rebuilt a g260 synchro were 160
A pop and bearings were nearly 200 a piece
