A New Race Video and a Request!

    Hey everyone!

I know this is technically a racing thing, but that's only half the point of the thread. I'm trying to use my new Youtube channel not only to share onboard footage as often as I can, but also to help promote the shop a bit and get people interested in vintage racing. I'd love your help if you could watch the video and provide input about if I'm on the right track (hah...). I'm trying to make the video accessible to racing fans and those who aren't as hardcore (at least not yet), as well as try to get the viewer excited about vintage racing. Any other comments would be welcome too!

    Thanks,

    Mike

I think it is great. Nice clear view of what being in the car may look like. Good narration and explanation of the laps and techniques.

Nothing flashy or annoying, just a solid video on real world vintage racing.

Awesome save at the end, truly grace under pressure.

My sister and mom don't live too far away over in Wallkill, I am outside Philly. I have considered reaching out to maybe stop by and take a look at the shop when I am up there??

I also have a Triumph TR2 and do a little side work for a local restoration shop, ragtops.com.

thats a great video mike. is that you doing the narration? you were blasting through traffic like they were almost standing still. why does it seem like your car is so much faster than all the others?

We could probably arrange that! Just PM your schedule. We're mostly around until Lime Rock labor day weekend.

Thanks! That is me, yes. There are a few reasons for the speed difference: First, the Ginetta is just a stupid quick car. Second, the nature of vintage racing grids puts a wider variety of cars on track in each group, so things can spread out quite a bit in some cases. Third, because this is basically an amateur hobby there's a wide variety of experience and skill levels. That's another reason why I never go 100% when I drive.

Excellent, relaxed commentary and to the point.
As others have said, Great Video.

Good call on the yellow triumph and the save towards the end of the video.

Thank you! Is there anything I could potentially say and/or do to help express the excitement of vintage racing a little better? Sound aside, which was a mic issue.

Actually, I think the pace of the narration and pace is good to show how racing can be a test of sustained concentration. Almost the driver against the track most of the time instead of car against car.

It is not about swapping paint with other cars but rather maintaining consistently fast lap times is the key to winning. Remembering each braking point, apex, monitoring brake/tires, etc, is much more important than pulling off some killer pass that makes you look like a hero.

Totally unrelated but just thought of it, unrealistic but...
Iracing and other video game simulators should add an option where if you crash, a charge is made to your credit card to cover the costs of the simulated damage in real dollars. That would up the concentration level a bit and prepare people for the real world.

The only thing I'd consider is a better mic setup so that you can really hear the car versus the wind noise. It makes a huge difference in the viewing experience!

Otherwise the video is great fun to watch/listen to.

Good insight! Unfortunately I had a mic failure just before this race, so I 100% agree with the sound bit. I'll be picking up a new stereo mic today and hopefully solving that part!

Sorry for that buddy, did not mean to make it sound as though your commentary was boring. It was definitely not. I don't think you would want to come across as forcing the viewer to enjoy the videos and/or vintage racing, but rather to invite them to it as opposed to just being a spectator.

The below quote is rather spot on, and I doubt I could have expressed it better myself.

Not at all, I'm just always looking to improve and wanted to see if there were any elements/ideas which didn't occur to me! I'm glad to know that though as a little positive reinforcement never hurts :p

This is a Vid of our 318i getting wrecked. You can almost hear me cursing and talking at the end after the engine was off. it revs over 7 thou so it gets a little loud. I wont be able to ever do commentary as the odd time if the car is on the edge i can forget to breathe. let alone talk.
most times all I can say under my breath is quoting Ludacris.

I think the video might be set to private, as I can't open it. One of our customers suggested I do "live" commentary, but it would be pretty dull because I don't emote much in the car. Sounds like you might be a good candidate for a blooper reel!
