Anyone trying to go in on some 94mm forged mahle pistons? (for m30)

Aight yall, I've seen videos and posts about people running vw pistons, and I'm pulling the trigger. Only problem is they come in sets of 4, and the place with the best prices doesn't have half a set kicking around right now. Anybody want to split a set of 4 with me?

The ones to get are "94A, pistons, rings, stock clips and wrist pins (no barrels) $259.99".

    Hi Mate

Sounds interesting. I'll be starting/posting an M30 build mid next year. Only thing I'm missing is forged pistons. Was initially planning on going stock as the limiting factor seems to be the head rather than the pistons (from what I hear). G&T seems to be making pretty good numbers on stock pistons. Any reason you're going forged?

Yea, my block needs more than a hone, and I have both a supercharger and a turbo at the ready, so I'd rather go forged over cast. Forged pistons being expensive, I did some research. VW pistons have the same wrist pin size, are inexpensive, and have been done successfully by people in the past. The two inexpensive options I considered are AA performance (hypereutectic cast), and Mahle. From what dub enthusiast say Mahle has been the go-to piston since dinosaurs roamed the earth, and is for sure forged. Some guys tested the mahles, and they were stronger than all cast pistons for the dubs, but not as strong as JE or other true forged pistons, which I can't justify spending top dollar on.

You are right, the bottle neck is right before the intake valve in the head more than anywhere else. Thing is my head is already done, and I'm so far into a complete rebuild at this point a few hundred for pistons is something I can justify.

I don't have any actual experience with the big bore pistons but wonder if the reduced wall thickness could lead to issues like cracking between the cylinder walls or head gasket issues especially if its under boost?

m90 had 93.4mm, largest oem piston is 94,955MM(+0,40) for m5 sharing the same block. While I don't have the siamese m90/m88/s38 block, I do have a very early m30b35 with both sets of motor mount holes, and the knob under the exhaust manifolds (punched out for turbo oil line in m106s), meaning I theoretically have the lesser known beefy b35 block with lighter crank as well. So there is a little optimism for me.

From what I've read ovaling of the bore is the real fear, but these blocks are a dime a dozen. If I start killing head gaskets I can always go mls or have the block ringed. Not looking to run more than 1 bar boost anyways. This thread also has me thinking it should be safe at 94mm http://www.mye28.com/viewtopic.php?t=30293

Put it this way too, m90/s38b36 owners don't seem to have issues, s38b38 owners over time seem to have issues with their 94.6mm bore, 94mm is right up the middle, .6mm away from both. It's a coin flip, and I'm a gamblin' man.

That was going to be my next question, wall thickness issues. From my understanding, forged pistons will need slightly more clearance due to the metal/piston expanding etc. Do you know what the final bore size on the block will be? What sort of compression ratio? I did a lot of research on this a few years ago when I started collecting parts, I wanted to go down this path too. Only thing holding me back was the bore size. Why not just pick up a used block?? Mind you, not a bad deal, 6 forged pistons for less than $400. I'm still tempted to go down this path. Will see if I can dig up some more info.

From what I gathered it puts me at around 9.2:1, and I can shave a little off the top of the pistons to find 9:1, no idea on final bore size. Was just going to drop pistons off at my machinist and let him make sense of the bore, he sees the inside of more engines than I.

Couldn't get just the pistons at lowbugget, and their sets are a little expensive. Bought two sets from kaddieshack, another dub site, 840 shipped. Idk what I'm going to do with all of these cylinders, but I'm happy to have the pistons finally. Should arrive tuesday.

What happen to the "4x Mahle Pistons, Rings, Stock clips and wrist pins. (No Barrels) $259.99"? If they don't have them, why bother even advertising it....

You know that you could have just gotten forged M30 pistons for a little more, and you would have had less stuffing around...

Yeah they didn't want to hook it up with just pistons and I didn't care to dig deeper. Just wanted the shit ordered already so I shopped around. All the dub places seem to be out of socal, meaning I ended up paying tax on em, and nobody was willing to sell just pistons, or split a set up. If anyone wants a pair of 94mm pistons hit me up, Ill be selling the cylinders on the samba lol.

Personally id just buy and keep all 8. Then if something happens you have spare or just gotta buy 4 again not 8 or 6
