Safest way to dip head?

I want to dip the head to clean out the intake and exhaust channels in addition to just getting the whole thing nice and clean.

I was thinking diesel and plan to re-use it as a cleaner and disposing of the towels appropriately... might there be other options? I dont really want to spend $100 on cleaning chemicals that wont get much use after a dip. Any ideas?
