Rod knock? Loud lifters? Exhaust leak? What do you think

Got my engine in, running, exhaust built, fired it up and this
Sorry, we couldn’t find that page

So low down on the motor, I pulled it 2 years back from a running car, no noises, it sat in a garage with out oil for about 2-3 years.
Motor in, 20w50 oil, running with open headers I didn't hear any noise.
Built the exhaust, fire it up and take it for a spin.when I come back I hear this noise.
First in thinking knock, but I have read a bunch of stuff on the lifters going bad and making a lot of noise.
The noise sounds to be upper but that could just be me hoping.
I'm also thinking maybe an exhaust leak?

    Thoughts?

When you swapped the pan, did it have a baffle riveted into the shallow part? If I remember correctly, that can hit the crank.

I have no first hand experience with this, so take it with a grain of salt.
The sound I hear in the video seems like a thin piece of metal being rubbed, which would support your theory.

I disagree with the oil weight being the cause of loud lifters.
I run liqui-moly racetech 10w60. I have never gotten any noise out of my lifters. (I also don't have much left from the stock oiling system).

I would guess oil pan baffle installed wrong.

The answer won't be on here though... Start taking shit apart again!

How long of a ride did you take it on? My engine was very noisy for a while after I first started it. The lifters seem to take a while to pump up.

This is what the windage tray interference sounds like. While it's an S50b32, it should be similar enough for comparison.

Thanks to Eric for taking the video in the first place.

so the e34 pan could have pushed that tray up? I left that tray on because I assumed it would prevent oil starvation(?).

Whats recommended to do with the bracket that holds the e36 oil pump pick up?

That's exactly what happened to me when I built my first motor lol... Did an M50 with M52 internals but used the m50 windage tray lol!

Here's my thread from back in the day:

Last few posts are the discovery haha.

Hahah man, something so small and stupid has had me lose all my motivation for this swap, I as of yesterday was planning on tossing the m20 back in thinking it was a fucked motor haha.
looks like im gonna keep it going then.

                          Thanks everyone!

Different trays fit different cranks. If you have one on the block and one in the pan, then yes it may have pushed it up.

Bend it back/forth to work harden it until it snaps off. If you unbolt it you need new main bolts, and if you grind it off you'll leave little bits of steel swarf everywhere.

I'll join the incorrect oil baffle crew. I ran into the same thing with my last engine swap. Videos and pictures of my experience here - http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/showthread.php?t=318365
