    Strange gas smell

    Hi all.
Not sure if it was a coincidence, but I replaced the fuel filter a few weeks ago, and next day, I started smelling a lingering gas smell in the garage.
Went back and re-check all hoses, fittings, etc. but all is good, no visible leaks anywhere.
I don't smell it while drive it or otherwise parked, just when it has been sitting in the garage for some time, I open the garage door and it goes away. It's more like gas fumes smell rather than strong raw gas leak.

Would the charcoal canister produce this kind of smell? Any other ideas?

    unrelated leak around gas tank/filler...
Gas can leak onto the top of the tank, and unless it's a lot, you'll never see it.

Good call, I will check that area. Any other way to check besides taking out the back seat and look under the fuel pump lid?

i don't mean to state the obvious, but, did you spill any when you did the work? dispose of the old filter in a garbage container and now that container smells? leave a rag around that has gas on it still?

as well, I find things like this don't happen to be coincidental. you worked on an area of the gas system one day, then have a leak the next, its most likely from that area of work and not that you just happen to spring a leak somewhere else at the same moment.

Replace/re set your clamps at the filter. the former preferably, just in case a clamp has lost its tension.
fuel is probably leaking when the system is pressurised, and bleeds off while the car sits.
the leaked fuel vaporises and leaves the odour in the enclosed space.

Thanks for the suggestions, I will double check the clamps this weekend.
