What things do you wish were made better/has been made better?

For me this week it was key carabiners. Broke two in one week.

Had this style that is available at your local whatever store:

Found these guys off kickstarter and spent entirely too much and bought a grade 5 titanium handgrey h3 carbiner for $85:

Its because like 90% of carabiners now are cheap hooks made out of cast aluminum now. The real ones from a climbing store would probably last longer. That one you got is legit looking though.

Current things I wish were made better:

Android phones, Im sick of plastic, new Pixel is a good step forward (im ignoring Samsung cause I hate their interface).

    Laptops

Clothing in general, seems like I have to spend $650 to get a good rain shell to last more then 3 years (Goretex seems the way to go for long use).

European cars in general. Too much alloy and plastic parts vs actual metal parts being used to make them. I have been working around european cars since 1994 and have watched this take place.

Pretty much everything, except for the rare thing that was well made to begin with. Most everything today is too cheaply made. Flimsy, plasticy, whatever. Homes especially. Cheap 2x4s (which aren't even 2" by 4"), covered in plastic on the outside, and drywall on the inside. Cheap wood trim made of cheap wood, cheap hardware. Cheap "hardwood" floors, if that. Junk.

Android phones - biggest gripe with phones moving to metal and glass is none removable batteries.

Laptops - they should really focus on making laptops IP certified. I've killed a few laptops via water.

+1 on the clothing - luckily selvage denim is making a come back, as is goodyear welting boots.

For anyone into boots, this guy does some nice resoling/custom boots:

Couldn't agree more. Shit like this particularly:

If only makers would just focus on making internal/important parts, like gears, out of metal instead of plastics.

Cooling system parts (like thermostat housings) are particularly bad for this.

Its nice to see that Texas has recently allowed for reproduction of old cars on small scale. If only big automakers would start reproducing and offering old new cars, and if only more jurisdictions allowed it.

Going to be fun to see how Pex works out for people in 20-30 years. As we all know 30 year old plastic is very brittle.

All British car parts, ever. They sucked new and they suck and cost a lot now. It's super frustrating because there isn't even a good version of the parts to pay more for and get.

I'm shopping for bedroom furniture sets right now so.. that I guess. I really want to make my own but it will definitely involve some learning to come up with something halfway decent.

Lots of things, but I have found with a bit research, and willingness to spend a bit more money, the quality your looking for is available from a small outfit someplace that still has a lot of prude in the product there are selling

I've got a carabiner on my keys as well, had it on there for over 10 years now, randomly found it one day on a chain link fence in a park when I was younger, and have had it since, pretty solid, def steel, I dont ever clip it to my pants like your supposed too, unless I'm going on like a roller coaster or something, just a trinket kinda thing, like the feel of it etc

Buy cheap buy twice, now thats not to say I buy top end shit b/c I too am a cheap ass, sometimes you get lucky and get a good product for a good deal, but usually not. usually stupid random shit, like bike inner tubes, bed sheets, clothes, and I'll agree on the laptops too, I had a few apple laptops in my day and all of them had screen problems/hard drive problems, PC laptops were even worse, this iMac I'm on now has been good to me, and its over 7 years old now

Oh and motorcycle gasket kits, those fuckers never give me what I need and the shit never fits right
