Problem to run a little cold?

Not sure if my M20 is running at the right temperature. The gauge for the coolant goes to about the first line outside of the blue, but often in the winter it sits just at the last bit of the blue line.
I noticed today that I had a bit of a rich smell coming from my exhaust, which I suspect is the car running a bit rich when it knows its a little cold.
Is it a problem to run this way, or should I look into putting a new thermostat in?

Does it put out 'hot' air to the cabin or does it just put enough to get by? We recently replaced a fan clutch (center leaked all the fluid out) on a M52 due to cool temps(fan constantly engaged). BTW the fan issue was noticed after replacing the thermostat, water pump, belt and hoses. All these items were due but not the culprit

Almost every e30 I've owned or been in sit in between the first line after the blue and the very middle. If your car is running at the blue line the entire time you drive it, that's generally not to good for the car considering it's not able to heat up to proper running temp

Depends. the stock gauge isn't very accurate.

        I'd replace the t-stat if the t-stat housing's not
getting up to 180. those i-r guns work well enough for thst.
