    Driveline Vibrations

    Car: '86 325e s52 ZF 5sp 2.93 open diff (original to car)

I have been feeling some vibrations in my drivetrain recently. They have been mostly at low speed at most engine speeds. Additionally on engine braking at around 3k or more rpm there is a different vibration that has a deep rumble sound accompanying.

Reading up on this I found that most people say that the driveshaft is the likely culprit for much of these vibrations. I used a junkyard DS (e36 328 shaft) with new guibo and CSB when i did the swap, so this seemed to be likely the cause. I replaced the driveshaft yesterday with a rebuilt shaft from driveshaft specialists ('87 325e shaft). On my test drive the vibrations were gone from all acceleration and constant speed driving.

The engine braking vibration remains. I am hoping to get potential causes from the crowd here. My first thought is that perhaps the pinion in the differential has lost some of its thrust support and on engine braking is being pushed fore/aft. Does anyone have any experience with issues like this?

How much rotational slop is there in the differential? If you turn the drive shaft with the wheels blocked or E-brake applied, how many degrees do you get before the axles start to rotate? Are your bolts on the output flange to the axle loose? (Don't ask)
Sounds like it's time for an LSD swap anyway.

Went for another drive today. The vibration is at about 2750 rpm during deceleration in gear. I push the clutch and it goes away. I don't notice it during acceleration. If I rev the engine in neutral or clutch in it is not there. It doesn't do it every time but it is fairly repeatable, I have done it in 3rd and 5th gear. I will have to have another look under the car and see if there is play in the half shafts or pinion.
