How can I fix my shorted out license plate lights?

The only overhead warning light I have on is for the license plate lights. It's also a legal requirement to have them where I am. I haven't gotten in trouble for it yet, but I'd like to try to fix them.

I bought new bulbs, but when I went to change them, it was clear the bulb holders had shorted out. The connectors were burned, black. Putting the new bulbs in did nothing.

I don't even know where to begin trying to fix this problem. My only idea is to cut off the ruined old connectors, and solder on new ones. Is that even worth a try, or would they just short out again?

Just get new housings. Take the old ones out and look at the metal meant to hold them in. Usually it rusts here due to the electricity's close vicinity to the outside world, ie water. Clean off the rust and throw a bit of paint over the bare metal. After this and new housings you should be fine.

it's a Kenny Powers quote on wheels
