Bought a 2002 in Chicago, need to ship it to PNW. Anyone here able to help?

    Hi R3V;

I'm making a switch from e30s to 2002, and need to sort out shipping for the 74tii project that I just purchased from Chicago (pictured below).

I've completed an auction cycle on U-ship, and am not loving the results - too much money to ship a 2000lb car on an open trailer. I don't have the time to drive it across the country myself, and so now i'm wondering about other options.

Does anyone here in the PNW have (or know someone reliable that does) an enclosed single car trailer and a truck that would deliver the car to me in Oregon? PDX would be fine, but even better if delivered to my residence in Bend. I'm trying to keep it under $1000 shipped.

i'm also interested in a partial trade to have the car shipped in exchange for my r3v'd e30 318is, which is in running & driving condition but will need front end body work to get back on the road. More info on request.

Anyhow, I figured someone in the PNW e30 community might have some ideas...

    Thanks!

i'll probably post a FS ad here for the e30; i'm also considering harvesting the m42 & associated parts to re-swap the 2002 (from m20 to m42), since the m20 that's in there has low compression on 2 cylinders...

fly to chicago for 200$, or fly someone. Pay 2 drivers a total of 800$ to drive it to portland?

If it was a weekend, i may be down

its a 32hour drive straight, and could be down with a team of drivers, find someone else? and ill be up for this idea. it may be 1200$ total with a few flights, but this way it moves asap

That wouldn't be a bad idea, though i'm slightly concerned about the ability of the car to make it that far without incident, only because it's got enough little electrical issues (windshield wipers don't work, nor do the turn signals) that I wouldn't be super comfortable driving it myself across the country - and I would not want to put someone else in a position to have to deal with any weird glitches or break-downs that occur along the way.

I'd happily volunteer to drive it cross country if you end up going that route. I have AAA too!

I got zero shit going on ATM, so I'm free whenever.

Don't cheap out on shipping it.

We already had an issue with a car we shipped to Florida on an open trailer - they had it in the nose down position on the trailer, and the oil started leaching out the oil pan seals. This not only coated the underside, but then when the dipsh*t driver unloaded it, they ignored the low oil warning. There was also a broken taillight and several new small dents in the trunk when it arrived.

Try as much as possible to get an enclosed shipper. Even if it means it towed to a nearby yard and dispatched from there to a yard in Portland..

If you still need help shipping, I can put you in contact with one of my dealer friends who gets cars shipped every week from around the country.

This is the company I used to ship my E30 from San Diego to St. Pete, FL. They seemed to be reasonably priced and had decent pick up zones.

Reliable quoted me right around $2000 for their enclosed transport. Too high for me, but it would be nice go with an enclosed option in an ideal world.

I guess think of it this way, how good is the paint and body as it sits right now.

Now estimate how much paint and body costs to get it back to that shape after rocks and damage. Considering it's coming across area that is probably still covered in snow or gravel from snow or deicer - yah, I'd open the budget up a bit more.

It's a good point for sure. The paint and body is in good '20-footer' condition, but nothing spectacular. Also the cost to transport if I go with Reliable or similar would be almost 1/3 the cost of the car.

When dealers are shipping average cars back and forth (not exotics), they're generally shipping on open trailers, right? It would be good to know what the difference might really be between dealer-network shippers and the more plebeian option (like DAS, who thus far is the best deal by far, but not without their share of horror stories). If there's a greater standard of care with a dealer-network carrier, then it would be great to get in touch with them...
