    Z3M radiator with S52

Has anyone used this combo? My rad is leaking and I'm looking to replace it with a Mishimoto Z3M unit. I know they are popular with the v8 swaps but they have a little more space to work with in front of the motor. I plan to run a ton of track time in the car and haven't had any significant cooling issues so far but the needle does start to rise slightly in mid-summer autocrosses.

Current rad has a 1.57" thick core, the Z3M mishimoto is 2.4" thick. Space starts to get pretty tight around the waterpump nut but I've got one of those gimicky TMS nuts on the pulley cause they chucked it in an order for free, I can easily save 1/2" there by removing it.

Fan is a 16" spal pusher, no puller. No AC, no power steering, only the water pump nut and crank bolt look to be potential hazards. Engine mounts are AKG swap poly and the trans are Rogue with the cups.

EDIT: Verified that with the stupid nut removed I have 1.50" space between current rad and both the crank bolt and the WP. The new rad is 0.83" thicker and leaves me with 0.67" space if I make the upgrade. Is this enough?

If you're using a pusher, cut off the water pump nub for some extra space.

Yes it can be done, a few here have done it. If you use oem your still getting plastic endcaps though.

Yup it fits, fairly well too.

Thicker rad means the lower hose which already fit tight in there now fits even worse, even after trimming.

Mine arrived well packaged and the box in good condition but it still had a slightly crushed outlet port. I'm debating cutting the original port off, bead rolling a new end and welding a 90 degree fitting on instead as it would probably give better fitment for the hose though it'd be a coont to install.

Also of note, the Mishimoto Z3M rad has a better drain setup in my opinion (angled spout) but the overflow barb barely accepts a hose/clamp with the way it's designed and fabricated. Cooling is great, clearance to the front of the motor is acceptable. Top mount fits a bit worse than with the e36 Mishi rad I had before, so that will need a bit of love too.

I have one but it's not installed yet. Was also wondering about trimming the water pump...if you use the OEM Z3M this is required correct?

Couldn't tell you about that, but it fits fine in mine with the Mishimoto when you're looking at clearance to the waterpump and crank bolt. It's got issues of its own but that doesn't seem to be one of them.

Stay away from Mishimoto. I had (3) that cracked and leaked. I have a z3m Behr radiator now with a Spal pusher and have had no cooling issues. Fits perfect.

I'd agree to research them further. My original rad made it about 2-3 years before the core started to leak, the replacement had this crushed outlet that I needed to deal with before install.

That being said they did upgrade me from the e36 to Z3M triple core for at no charge when processing my warranty. I still had to pay the $55 shipping but it could have been worse.

I'll see how long this one goes for before I have issues (if I ever do have any problems). If it fails too I'll probably just buy another brand, hopefully by then the Canadian dollar has recovered enough.

It never ceases to amuse me how many people think that all aluminum radiators are more reliable. Yes, the stock type radiators fail at the plastic. But they usually last at least a decade/100,000 miles before they do that. (Or a LOT longer.)

early model e30 m52b28 swap and i'm fitting the mz3 radiator now myself.
The AC compressor is scary close. Anyone else have this issue?

Also has anyone had issues fitting e36 M3 samco hoses? Probably the aftermarket URO parts therostat housing making it very difficult to get the hose on. It seems as if the hose is nearly the same diameter as the fitting...

I also got an issue with the top hose in its length i'm not sure I can trim to correct. pics of that tomorrow but just wondering which hoses you swap guys ended up using.
