    Help Me before I F*** up please S50us Q

Hello, please help a brush with his first motor swap

So I bought a cylinder head with the intention of it being a S50us cylinder head as the buyer listed. Seller was doing multiple swaps to his cars including a S54 in a E30 which made me believe him.

Was buying a head with just valves and springs no cams or trays.

Turns out when I took the springs off I realized they were M50 single springs. The owner claimed it came out of a 95 M3 with S50 cams and trays in it. Is this even possible???
Told him I paid for a head with M3 springs and I wanted my money back. He sent a set of 'M3 springs' to me.:rippedoff:

Get them and they're a set of mismatched m52 cone springs. Jesus.

Either way it was a 400 casting head single vanos with valves and m50 springs and 100xxx miles straight head.

So for the M50/S50/S52 swap owners out there I have some questions.

    -I have a S50us block

    1) Can I use the M50 springs with M3 S50 cams/Trays?

    2) Can I use the M50 springs with m50 cams/trays with S50 block?

If so, power losses compared to S50 cams/Springs?

I was trying originally to fully rebuild the engine to a full s50 engine, but finding s50 springs/cams/trays is seeming to be a pain now. Plus $$$$ difference.
I am starting to lean towards just doing all M50 internals in the head since its much more easy and cheap to find those parts in comparison.

I realize it would end up being a 3.0 M50 if it works, but hey the US got fucked over anyway on the E36 M3 S50/52s so its not a huge loss.

I am just trying to freshen up the motor and get it running now since it has been so long since the car moved and theres so many other things I need to buy; bottom end bearings/piston rings/gaskets/vanos/front tube....etc

I can always get Schrick cams/springs later on if I do M50 springs/cams -----If possible???

So PLEASE, if you have experience with this and no problems I appreciate it.
    Thanks

You'll be fine using M50 springs. The S50 is just a stroker M50 anyways so all the parts are capable. I also highly doubt there will be any real performance difference between the springs.

M50 cams on a S50? I mean yes it's possible, but I don't know why you would. At that point I'd just sell of the S50 stuff and do a regular M50

Well they are more hard to find. If I did S50 cams could I use M50 trays to Save some $?

          Thanks

No offense, but it seems you need to do a lot more research and learning before taking on this project. M50 cams are beyond pointless in a S50 swap. Also you'd have to pay for a custom tune for your new bastard engine.

I really think you should have just bought a S50 because theres a lot you don't seem to know. I know we all have to start some where but it seems you might have bitten off a little more than you can chew. Also yes you can use M50 tray with S50 cams. In fact I believe the S50 and M50 trays are the same part number).

It was a good deal. I just wanted m50 cams to get it running then later get aftermarket cams, I havent driven the car in a while.
Guess ill stick to PN for advice. Thanks.

Again, M50 cams aren't the solution. Post a WTB thread in the WTB section and somebody should have some S50 cams. You can also use S52 cams if you use the S52 and M52 trays.

i think you should buy a complete running engine. From past experiences i can almost guarantee it will cost you loads more to do it this way.

Well, it makes sense at first but most S motors are high mileage and sooner or later need a overhaul right? Whats the usual miles out of it if not over revd 250k? beaten on?

The heads are virtually identical so you are good there. The main differences between an M50 and S50 are the cams, springs, and the displacement. Keep in mind that there are two different diameter lifters in the 24V motors.

With that said, you can mix and match at will basically. Just keep in mind that the dual S50 springs are meant for more revs than the single M50 springs.

I have a full set of S50 cams, springs, trays, and lifters that I will most likely get rid of this winter if you can wait that long.
