    13 Button OBC Issue

    Hello,

I have a 1992 325ic (vert) that had the 13-Button OBC installed when I bought it. Throughout my ownership, the LCD has been damaged from 'bleeding' and the light bar was burnt out. Because of this, I could not tell if the OBC was functional as shining a light to read a burnt out screen wont work when the screen itself it destroyed.

I ordered a unit off eBay and upon receiving it I've noticed a few irregularities in the process of trying to make it work. First of all, the OBC that was removed from my vehicle has a white backing on the case, whereas the replacement is all black, seems to be from and E28 due to the coding plug that came with it.

I switched the 4-6 coding plug from the original OBC to the new OBC and plugged it in. I can tell the unit has power because the LCD did display line segments and the backlight bulb lit up. While the LCD displayed something, it really didn't display anything useful. Mostly constant, non-flickering gibberish, wingdings, whatever you want to call it. None of the buttons do anything to change the display, not even the reset button. One time while cycling the power through the ignition switch the OBC displayed '----UHR', but no buttons would change anything on it, and when I recycled power it went back to gibberish and then nothing, then small line segments.

As far as trouble shooting, I've followed all the wires and checked all 4 fuses. I pulled the instrument cluster to check the plug on the back and it all seems ok. However, one thing I havn't found is the OBC relay. Some say its above the ECU on the passenger side, others have said its next to the ABS board on the drivers side. Regardless, I have not found it. My car has the BC stalk so I assume the vehicle was equipped with the system originally and it was not a retrofit. I read about the SI board with the batteries being bad, however each person with this problem also had problems with other things related to the SI board. All my indications are good and working normally, no abnormal lights, tach and speedo work fine, no lights on the check panel.

I'm going to keep looking for the OBC relay, but I'm running out of ideas. I messaged the seller of the OBC to see if he can confirm that it was a working unit, because as of now Im starting to suspect the OBC itself. Just looking at what the LCD is doing, it could seem that perhaps the unit isn't getting enough power. I got it to display '----UHR' once, but was unable to enter anything.

Any ideas on something to do next or something I'm doing wrong?

    Thanks,
    Matt

Here's a photo of what comes up on the screen when the unit is plugged in. Nothing changes when the key is turned nor when the illumination light is activated.

****Sorry for the rotated photo, I don't know how to change it. It doesn't really matter though because there's noting useful on the screen anyway.******
