    Valve Clearance

I was adjusting my valves this past weekend, and I was unable to get the clearance on one of my exhaust valves small enough. I rotated the eccentric as far as it would go but the gap was still too large - which was not an issue on any of the other valves.

Anyone know what might be causing this? I assume its pointing me towards needing to rebuild the head. At least in the meantime the car is still running fine.

    Thanks!

what do you mean as far as it would go? right the way around or as far as you could see the hole? if the eccentric is installed wrong the hole is in the wrong position to access it properly and get the full range of adjustment especially using the bmw tool

one of your valve stems is probably mushroomed. Not my picture and not BMW but just to give you an idea how bad it can get. Most likely to no lubrication.

one of my valves had the same issue when I got this car which prompted to the head rebuild and finally took me to this current stroker build.

Take a look at the valve stem end with the mirror and a flashlight. See if you can see anything. If mushroomed, make sure you find the cause and address it.

how close to spec can you get ?

is there any visible sign of damage on the cam lobe ?

can you detect excess play in that (or any) rocker ?

If its running right, compression is good, all valves are fully closing (that valve could be sticking) and the noise from that one valve doesn't drive you crazy, just live with it and keep an eye on it. You can also get an over size eccentric as a bandaid.

Interesting, yeah the gap isn't massive but its definitely more than it should be. Theres a decent amount of wiggle with the feeler in place. I got down close and looked at it to see if anything was obviously wrong, but not knowing what I'm looking for I didn't see anything. The only thing I'm noticing is that the exhaust smells a little rich (at least during warm up) but that is likely a completely separate issue.

As long as its running fine I'm going to take a short break from doing any work on it. I just got finished removing and resealing the rear diff, re-chipping the car, and replacing the exhaust. Its break time!

Once I have the energy again I'm going to check the compression and pull the cover back off and see what I can see. But I've never had this head rebuilt so I might just start making plans to do that and just pull the whole thing off once I get back in there.

          The fun never ends! Thanks!

You'd be amazed how long these will run with a little extra valve play. Again, as long as there isn't a more serious unrlying problem.

If you decide to ride this out I'd def get an over sized eccentric so at least your clearances are within spec
