    Replace slip discs in LSD

    Hi -

My diff is making funny noises (3.46 LSD). It was doing this when I first got it and we changed the fluid (last guy had put the wrong fluid it). Once the new fluid was in the noise went away.

After a bit of spirited driving last nice its making noises again going around corners (grip, slip, grip, slip noises).

I know the slip discs are cheap as - its not too major to replace them is it? Presumably I can chuck a few more in for more lockup also.

    Cheers for any advice.

(yes I did search but the threads were not helpful)

From what I've seen/read/heard, internal differential work like adding slip discs is very difficult and exacting work involving lots of measurements. But PM "DanGillan"- he works in a shop that builds them and can probably tell you better than I why its best left to the experts.

      1) disks are not cheap, and you'd need three
      2) you are severely underestimating the difficulty of increasing lockup. if it was that simple, why wouldnt everyone do it? i work at diffsonline.com, and yes we can sell you clutches, and yes you can replace them, but no its not easy, and you cant just take things apart and put them back together. there are tolerances to be set, torque ratings on EVERYTHING and if everything is not perfect, your diff wont work correctly, there are also shims to be set, and positions to set. I do not reccomend doing what you want to do, but if you choose to go through with it, feel free to PM me with questions and i'll help as much as I can.

Yes, it's not very simple, but not so difficult. Me and many my friends are doing this without any problems. There is a simple and cheap way to increase lockup by adding 2 additional discs between stop disc and diaphragm spring - picture.
Thickness of the discs depends from your LSD condition. If it's worn and sometimes spinning one inner wheel, then new 0,50 mm dics will be OK.
Of course brand new slip dics is a better idea...

What do you call 'everything' ? 8 hex bolts ..

We are not replacing roller bearings or crowngears, right ?

Differential is a pretty simple part. I think you are overestimating the difficulty of this job.

P.S. Sorry for my bad english.

        Peace
