    diff for m50...

which differential to use for an m50 swap? I have a 91 318is w/4.10LSD. Also what ECU should I use? At the moment I have a Jim Conforti m42 chip. Should I invest in an SMT-6?

this should go in the engine swaps sub.... just fyi

the diff depends on what tranny you're using, and what you're going to be using the car for.

as far as the engine management- only go standalone if you plan on turbocharging, otherwise, its pretty much useless. You'll need an ecu from an e36 or e34. If you're using a non-vanos engine, you need an ecu from a non-vanos engine. If you're using a vanos engine you can get away with an ecu from a 1993-1995 325, m3, or 525. If you opt for a 1995 ECU, keep in mind that it may have EWS which is a security setting that wont allow you to start your car. If you buy a chip from TMS, it should disable EWS as well. You should only have to worry about it with the silver lable ecus, the red labels dont have any problems.

I have a red lable 413 (vanos) if youre interested.

If you get an OBD1 motor with EWS it is pretty easy to cure with either an after market chip or cutting the correct wire.

I have a 3.23 rear diff and like it because of the great highway gearing and first gear is still very usefull.
