Slave cylinder how to know when bad

Ok so I'm doing my clutch here and wanted to know how to know if the slave cylinder is bad as it is becoming my prime suspect as to why my clutch might be remaining engage, and I get get the car into gear it is if the clutch is being pressed in even when it isn't. The pushrod sticks out say a finger length and shoots out so far when the clutch is depressed, that it requires piloting and severe pushing to get back into the cylinder, and when you let go it goes right back out, extending like clutch is depressed again, whats the solution, I need to get this car back on the road this weekend, the 528e is leaking gas in a scary way.

I'll take pictures for evaluation and understanding.

Just replace both the clutch master and slave cylinders. Quite often it's impossible to diagnose if it's one or the other and they have similar life spans. They don't cost a whole lot and since you'll be under the car anyway you won't be adding a whole lot of time to the job anyway. You'll at least have peace of mind that way...

I just want to know though is there a test to see if this is the problem.

How far is the slave cylinder supposed to stick out when no pressure is on it?

I can tell you that if you come out to your car in the morning and see your clutch pedal on the floor, and a BIG puddle of fluid leaking out, it is too late....

my problem is you hit the clutch and the pedal goes to the floor and the slave extends but won't go back in, what is the solution?

Replace either the master or the slave. Until the problem is bad enough to produce a visible leak it's a guessing game.
