    Helmet Question

My parents just informed me that they'd like to get me a hlemet for christmas, but the problem is they're planning on getting me one for my ATV. This spring I'd like to start doing some track days and autoXs but I'll just be starting out. My question is this: Should I look around now and try to find something that will do double duty or should I just get something that's good for the ATV and Mt bike and get a proper car helmet down the road when I get more serious?

Just based on fashion I think I should get two but seeing as living is more important to me I thought I'd ask the community's opinion.

    Thanks!

I'm no expert on helmets, but I can't think of any reason why you could not use an SA rated helmet for an ATV. Probably want to pick one with a wide view for better peripheral vison on the ATV & bike.

At most events, either an M2000 or SA2000 helmet is acceptable. But if you know that you'll be participating in motorsports activities, an SA rated helmet offers better protection.

If you can get both get both. SA is always a good idea for the track.

I've done a lot of research on helmets for our local track participants running our club HPDEs regarding M vs. SA helmets. For general HPDEs there is nothing wrong with using an M2000 or M2005 helmet, assuming the group you are running with allows it. The added benefits of an SA helmet are mainly in the nomex lining, and unless you are fully clothing yourself in nomex, having a nomex lined helmet is of little benefit.

The M helmets also seem to have a little wider eyeport, which I think is good for visibility. It varies from manufacture to manufacture of course.

I race an E30 and just spent $800 on a wide eye port Arai SA2005 lightweight helmet, but I wouldn't suggest that for someone just starting out with HPDEs.

I would suggest wearing a balaclava with the helmet, not so much for the fire protection aspect, but to pick up most of the sweat from your head. It will keep the lining staying fresher, longer.
