7 led vs 9 led "service interval" lights - years?

a.) Does anyone know what the breakdown is on what years/models/euro-imports the different clusters came from?

b.) I'm assuming that the 7 LED version is much more prevalent in the US, correct?

I want to say 86 and older had the 3 LED, but it may have been an even earlier cutoff

    For E30 it was 04/86

For E30...83-85 models had the 3 red LED's, early SI board without any chip just black plastic coded peg that goes into the back of the tach. 86-on models started using 1 red LED, different SI boards with coded chip. Not sure of the cutoff date and if it's different for euro models.

I'm tempted to call it 2/1986. That's the cut off for the older one, as per RealOEM. My 11/84 (1985) 535i has the 3 red LED one.

I have an '86 cluster, but never noticed which it had. Will report back.

I will say I've had my '86 cluster in my '85 and it worked fine.
