    Turbo Spec Comparison Table

    This is a resource that I think is pretty helpful for people looking for information on what turbo size people have used on their application and how it may relate to a similar turbo. I found this originally posted on NASIOC forum and wanted a link incase that went down for some reason. I also did some hunting and found specifications for Holset turbos. There are so many it is tough to know what is right, but this information should get you pretty close if you are looking at a holset.

    Turbo Spec Comparison Table (Wheel Sizes, Max Airflow, Bearings, Etc.)



    This list has been created to help compare turbo's more easily. As I looked at different turbo options it became clear that it was not a straightforward task, mainly due to inconsistent methods of listing turbo specifications by different manufacturers. Because of this it was difficult to even compare the physical wheel sizes of different turbo's.

    I began compiling the information that I could find by looking online and in the product catalog's of various manufacturers. Along the way I asked manitou for help and he did a lot of the work calling around to try and fill in the blanks that I could not easily find, and also adding info for other brands and models. Thanks to him we have a pretty good list together at this time.

    We chose common turbo's on the Subaru platform. Both stock location and rotated turbo's are included.We decided to keep this table as simple as possible and only include some of the most basic specifications. This includes the inducer and exducer measurements for both the compressor and turbine, and also the max flow rate of the turbo.

    This post is NOT meant to be a lesson on turbo basics. If you need that there are many resources on this site and elsewhere online. Here are a few links to get you started.






    Here is the list that we have compiled so far. Please let me know if there are any errors. All of this information should have come straight from the manufacturer, but there could still be errors, and I would be happy to correct any that are found. We are open to suggestions for more turbo's to be added to the list. If you have the specifications available that would make it much easier to get it added.

    I'm too lazy to help, but that list is missing some newer stuff, like PT6062(and probably whatever else came out when that did) as well as a lot of the Borg AirWerks stuff (S200/S300 probably most applicable. I see a few but the "BW ####" numbering scheme doesn't seem as popular as "s###" or "s###sx" etc.) most of which are good M20/m5x sizes. I'll try to find some time to gather some of this later.

      After looking at this more closely, The entire Borg Warner Airwerks SXE line seems to be missing.

      If we want to switch the Airwerks BW stuff over to more common names, here's what they convert to (could drop the sx/sxe off the end to shorten the name)
      Borg Warner 7670 - S256sx
      Borg Warner 8375 - S360sx
      Borg Warner 8875 - S363sx
      Borg Warner 9180 - S366sx


      Other stuff. Mostly new(er) SXE line (Billet wheel, 360deg thrust bearing, compressor speed sensor port) Only caring about S200/S300, since they seem to be of appropriate size. (These are all JB)

      The table sorted by flow seems to be misaligned.
      All the Holsets are journal bearing
      All the Garret GT(non-GTX) are journal bearing
      I think 50%+ of the ball bearing listings on there aren't ball bearing.

        Random nitpicks:
        The table sorted by flow seems to be misaligned.
        All the Holsets are journal bearing
        All the Garret GT(non-GTX) are journal bearing
        I think 50%+ of the ball bearing listings on there aren't ball bearing.

        Thanks for the feedback, I fixed everything and added what you listed. I assumed the S251 was 50 lbs just to approximate it in the chart. Obviously since this was taken from a subaru site the forced performance, blouch and steam turbos dont really apply but I know we are missing some other popular e30 turbos like the turbonetics, Comp (TCD), and Kinugawa turbos. It would be neat to include the KKK turbos from the 2002 and e23.

        It is really surprising when you find the number of smaller companies that build turbos, I wonder how many are just rebranded with a new housing. For example here is a local company (Under Pressure Performance) selling a '58-76R' Turbo Ball Bearing. Maybe its just a Garrett 35R with a different compressor cover?

            Yeah I think they usually mix and match stuff, or make their own compressor wheels (I believe this is how Precision started out).
            I feel like this list could bloat pretty bad if we started listing all the variations that people have come up with, and usually they don't flow or work any better than the original.

              I can't seem to find any exacting info, but it would be interesting to see what turbo the n55 uses. This is the best info I can find so far.



              Secondly, the N55 Turbo is pretty cool. It does use a custom version of the smallest Borg Warner EFR Billet Compressor wheel (62mm). However it has a custom inducer sizing, which is quite abit smaller than the exact wheel that is used in the BW EFR 62mm (45.8mm vs. the EFR's 49.6mm) with the extended tip technology. It also uses the twin seal arrangement as do the EFRs (not sure if this is common across other BW units). The turbine has the backing plate like the EFRs as well, but I do not think its a Ti wheel. The turbine is also quite small, approx. 53mm Inducer and 46.1mm Exducer. It is a Journal Bearing Turbo, unlike the EFR. Both housings seem to be built on the EFR foundation. Overall it seems like a very nice unit OEM unit, just does not have much flow potential.

              Maybe it flows around 40? No wonder the n55 engines have torque so low, that turbo spins up fast and with only 8.8 psi and dual vanos its no wonder bmw started putting this engine in everything.
