    M42 No Start

    I am working on a friends 91 318I, Had a cracked head. Trying to keep cost to a minimum but finding the M42 is not helping. Was a running car before I started. Had a small amount of anti-freeze in the number 2 cylinder if it sat for awhile. I pulled head found a hairline crack. I bought a E36 M44 and used that head. The M44 Cam journals were scored pretty bad. Reused the M42 Cams as they were in very nice condition. Used a flywheel pin and the cam indexing tool to time the cams. Bought all new timing guides, Timing chain and lower sprocket as the M42 was very worn, lots of hairline cracks and sharp points on sprockets. I kept the M42 Timing case and I reused the M44 Cam sprockets as there was no wear and I think that is my no start cause. I now notice the M44 cam sprockets do not have the timing dowels the M42 does. I have good spark and smell fuel on the plugs but the engine will not start. If I get the correct sprockets it should start, correct?

    i r confuzed.

    m42=twin cam-on-bucket
    m44=twin cam on rocker

    very different cams, I thought different head.

    and yes, the m42 needs timing info from the sprocket...

    not very m44 conversant.
    now, sometimes I just mess with people. It's more entertaining that way. george graves

        So you pulled a pre-96 E36 engine?

        96 and later used small roller rockers under the cam... and had no pins on the gears.
        But I thought all e36 m42s- thru '95- HAD those pins for cam timing info, and when they went away, the head design changed noticably- cam timing from a separate trigger,
        roller rockers, etc.

        At any rate, yes, the pegs are needed with the m42 efi, and as long as you're not trying
        to use roller cams with buckets, it should work.

        How is compression?

          Compression on #2 is low, Other three are great. It is an early E36 engine which I thought was designated an M44, maybe that's not correct. It looks just like the 1991 except the 1991 has a front mounted CPS. The Early E36 had a rear mounted sensor. I ordered a new Sprocket for the exhaust cam hope this helps. The Cams, Trays and Lifters I used are exactly the same on both engines.

            Ah, ok- take a look at realoem- the M44 showed up in later 95, for MY 1996. ish.
            The 92-95 e36 got M42's still.
            There were running changes along the way, to timing chains,
            valve stem sizes, etc, and maybe the cam position sensor.
            I'm sorry- I've forgotten if/when/where the crank sensor moved...
            too much booze, too little wrenching, recently.
