Yeah, I saw that page too on Monday. My neighbor (who has a 55 Mercedes) made me swear to polish it with steel wool if the cam stays in the engine to keep grit out. Either way, gonna try polishing it and worst case, the cam will have to become a regrind which I doubt will go that far.

Because I'm dumb it didn't occur to me to check the other side, so I did today. Surprise surprise, rust on the other intake cam. Fortunately, it is very light surface rust and not anywhere near as bad as the passenger side. Now all cams have a fresh coat of oil to hopefully slow any new rust formation. I doubt it will get much worse as both cars in the garage still have completely rust free rotors after 3 weeks. Not even a spec.

Another thing is that I got the water pump off and half of the impeller was very rusty. There was residual coolant in it and I am assuming the half that was in coolant was fine while the half that was out wasn't.

Good news is that all the accessories are off now so once the new seals/parts arrive, I can begin that process

        Wow, crazy about the rust!

Mind sharing your parts list for the chain guides & bearings? I'm a month or so behind you in making the same order.

When can I pick up the rusty water pump?

xD I am really annoyed by this pump. Once I get the pulley off. The last attempt I made involved two retaining pins to hold the pulley, a large clamp on the pulley wedged against the engine, another pulley putting more tension an the auxiliary belt, plus a small sledge hammer for the wrench. In the end, both pins now have a 90 degree bend :/ I will be getting a friend to help me break it free now that it is off the engine. I'll let you know how it goes

Also, I'll post all the parts I order here just because I'm sure it will be useful for a lot of people

Hey, so good news. I have another set of intake cams for the s62. The old ones I will remove and try to clean. Idk what I will do with them after that.

Also, here is a list of seals and some parts by part number in a csv format. I have not ordered everything on this list but nearly everything. If you copy the text and save into a csv file, you can open it in excel:

its just surface rust from sitting. rust is softer than the steel lifters and cams. not sure how it would damage anything if you clean em up.

                  Saturday night update

Hey, so another update on progress made this week. I received the first box of parts for the s62 which includes the rod bearings and oil pan seals. So enough to get the bottom end all ready to go. That was one order so hopefully soon the timing components will come along as well.

Now, as of today actually, the m60 is out of the bimmer. That was fun and didn't take too too long carefully wiggling it out. I didn't realize how big the slushbox was so it should be much easier getting the s62 in than the m60 out.

                  picture time:

                  and:

The next step will be to finish breaking the m60 apart. Like removing the transmission because a bolt stripped and it was getting late as well as keeping all of the goodies that still work and are annoying to replace (harmonic balancer, alternator, starter, compressor, etc). What is nice though is that now the old manifold is off and I can grab the flanges for the new headers. Hopefully soon I can start mocking them up with pvc

                  Progress :)

that is indeed quite a laundry list.

where did you end up ordering from?

have you checked with bmwmercedesparts.com? there web site sucked the last time i looked, but if you call husker bmw, you will get first rate service from their standard service department. the cheapest place i have found by far but sometimes it takes a while for the parts to arrive.

                      Been a short while

Hey, haven't updated in a little white but here is what has happened.

Some more parts arrived and I'll be breaking down the s62 to change the rod bearings and cams soon. I finished this weekend getting the m60 torn down (because I wanted to) and freed up space in the garage again. It was really interesting tearing the m60 down because I did not expect what I saw. The car loved to burn oil and I never found out why, the previous owner had the chain guides replaced not long before he sold me the car. Well, when I got to the guides, bolts were missing and working there way out... I was shocked by that to think I was using an engine in that condition. The icing on the cake though was a complete lack of an oil separator. I noticed while on a call actually when I saw the drain tube did not have its bolt to hold it in and was attached to nothing really. Also, one of the cylinder head bolts was warped and I needed to hammer my tool onto it to get that bolt out. I guess someone has taken the heads off before, I doubt the factory did that... Blew my mind, I mean that garage now has a thick layer of my brain all over it.

Aside from the the rod bearings looked ok but the main bearings all had scratches on them. Some significantly worse than other and the crank has scratches too. So now I am really glad that I did not opt to just sell the engine, jesus I could only imagine...

Also, took the steering box out to put in an m5 one :D That will happen soon but I also now have some e30 maintenance that needs to happen before I head to At The Vintage.

As for the parts, I searched by individual part numbers and basically chose between bavauto, ecs, pelican, and a couple other places to get the oem parts. no kits, just individual parts because that is cheaper... like building your own pc

That is quite the update! I'm glad you learned why the m60 was burning oil, something to keep in mind for future engines.
