Built a Camera Mount today (pics/videos)

So after looking at the group buy, and saying 40 dollars for THAT? I decided to build one, yes it is a tad crude, and not as perfect as the 40 dollar one, but I built it using about 8 bucks worth of materials and 45 min of my time.

Installation is easy, just pop the headrest off, and slide the mount onto the supports and tighten the four bolts, removal is backwords. It can work on either the driver side or the passenger side, and I plan on adding a camera tilt option so that I don't have to use the seat to adjust camera angle (up and down).

The camera is bolted to the mount using a normal plastic knob with a 1/4-20 bolt in it, was a buck at loews. The camera is held steady by a rubber washer that sits in between the camera and box aluminum. very light and VERY sturdy, only shaking is the car, and a little bit of the seat.

After I built it I then took a quick test drive, had to take the beater due to my friend blocking my white car's only route out of my driveway, however it only takes 15 seconds to move the mount to the other car.

Overall it works very well, going to paint it black, and perhaps add some rubber neoprene wetsuit material on the cut out areas of the box aluminum, so that it does not scratch the headrest pegs.

I was there while he was building it.

It works amazingly well, though is a bit ghetto

but that makes it cool 8)

edit: you could've gotten out with the white car :p, or i could've moved mine forward. the dash was taken apart, the pedals were still accessible :p

Couldn't you drill two holes into the box aluminum and then have the headrest slide through it?

what keeps it clamped down then? the headrest bars actually stick out beyond the side of the box aluminum about 4-5mm's, which allows the aluminum plate to clamp down onto the headrest bars, keeping it secure and locked to the headrest.

I was able to pickup the headrest and swing the bar with camera around and it did not budge an inch

Why would you need to clamp it down? Drill two holes the same size as the headrest bars into the box aluminum. Then slide the headrest through the holes.

it would still move a little bit, although you could rig some form of rubber bushing to keep it tight. I thought of that originally, but tested it a week ago and it did move, I perfer the clamp route better.

Plus there is a bend in the headrest bars, which your idea would not work with, mine mounts above the bend so that it is level witht he dash, your idea it would angle up, so a camtilt would be required
