It's stock - it's even mentioned in the user manual. I believe Canadian regulations required them. Hopefully at some point, I'll acquire some Euro Smilies and run the City Lights as DRLs.

FWIW, my OE buzzers never had a headlight reminder. (the few that worked anyway)
Adding a chime is super easy, +ve chime wire to the parking light wire, -ve chime wire through a diode to a +ve accessory wire. (behind the radio is a perfect spot, both wires are right there.)
As far as using the OE chime, I'd have to remember what the hell I did to mine, then think how to make it trigger off headlights. (I changed the chime on mine so the "door open" chime is for the OBC, and there is no longer a door open warning)-Dave

The chime has permanent power , and it has 3 gongs (ground)
So if you connect ground to the 3 poles on the gong, you get different sounds
Single gong, repetitive gong, different gong
I've heard the single and repetitive one, never heard the different sounding gong
So to activate that you would need a relay
To switch the positive from the light switch when turned on
To ground that is applied to the gong
But you'll also need a ground from the door, so the gong I h sounds when the door is open AND the lights are on
